Alternatively known as the Merc with a Mouth, Wade Wilson, aka, Deadpool, has dished out zingers for decades. And, in Deadpool & Wolverine, he still shows up at his wisecracking best. However, he doesn’t carry the dialogue cross by himself in the MCU’s latest hit. This time, he is assisted by an alternate version of Wolverine. Normally a gruff, tough-as-nails, mutant, Logan lets loose on this occasion, dropping one-liners with the same ferocity that he fights with.
Deadpool & Wolverine
A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Several other great lines from other characters make this one of the best MCU movies ever in terms of quips, which is saying something. Whether it’s Wesley Snipe’s version of Blade declaring there will be no other like him (watch out Mahershala Ali), or the Human Torch dropping his catchphrase, there is no shortage of conversational madness in the film. The movie truly marks a return to form for the franchise, and fans can only hope it’ll get even better from here.
10 “Welcome to the MCU. You’re joining at a little bit of a low point.” – Deadpool
The Deadpool films are reputed for effortlessly balancing the need to create a fully realized world and the need to poke fun at the real-world superhero landscape. This is seen again when Wade enters the void and meets several survivors in the void, including Channing Tatum’s Gambit (from the Gambit movie that never happened), Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and Dafne Keen’s X-23. He then gives them a rather cheeky welcome to the billion-dollar franchise.
Introspection… The Deadpool Way
Despite his thoughts remaining doggedly trained on the mission, Wade spares some time to poke fun at the current dire state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to The Marvels, Phase 5 has had more misses than hits, meaning no one will find pride in being part of the franchise at this particular time. Nice of Wade to also acknowledge that he too wasn’t so thrilled about joining the party when the fun had died out.
9 “They’re gonna make him do this until he’s 90!” – Deadpool
It’s the late 2010s and Hugh Jackman has returned to his home city of Sydney, New South Wales. Wolverine has just died in Logan, so the actor has resorted to living a quiet life with his family. He communicates with friends and Hollywood acquaintances through brief correspondence and slowly becomes more and more reclusive. That’s until Kevin Feige offers him a contract and, to no one’s surprise, he comes running back.
Well, Deadpool finds it all very funny. He lets it known in the movie that the suits at Marvel Studios will exploit Jackman’s obsession with the role, making him do it until he is truly Old Man Logan.
There Can Be No Other Wolverine
Once in a while, there comes an actor who grabs a role and owns it. Hugh Jackman is one such actor. At the moment, the consensus is that there can be no other Wolverine. Anyone else who tries to fill the shoes is likely to come up short. Well, it’s hard to know for sure since there are a few great actors that look like a comic Wolvie, notably Karl Urban from The Boys. Even so, Wade is right. So long as Jackman remains willing and able, it’s highly unlikely that anyone else will ever be cast.
8 “There’s only one Blade!” – Blade
One of the finest creations from the pre-MCU Marvel era, Blade was a stunningly evocative film, boasting dazzling costumes and immaculate action set-pieces, along with a note-perfect performance by Wesley Snipes. It was, therefore, expected to see him reprise his role in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Snipes’ Blade gets several iconic scenes, such as one where he fires a rocket launcher that he borrowed from the Punisher. Deadpool wonders, “Which Punisher?” adding that “there have been like five?” This prompts Snipes to declare there will only ever be one Blade.
A Sign of Things to Come?
Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie is still stuck in development hell, so Welsey’s Blade is technically still the only one. But are his words prophetic? It’s been five years since Ali was announced as the new Blade, and production on the new movie is yet to begin, so there might be a possibility that the studio simply isn’t interested in it getting made. Fans might never see another Blade.
Outside the behind-the-scenes context, Wesley’s words reflect public opinion. His version of Blade is highly revered, and after seeing him again, fans are unlikely to yearn for a newer version of the character.

10 Marvel Villians That Still Need An MCU Arc
These are some real baddies, but Marvel needs to really consider how to bring them into the MCU.
7 “No wonder the Avengers didn’t take you. Or the X-Men, and they’ll take anyone.” – Wolverine
Wade can easily get on someone’s nerves, and, shortly after meeting, he and Logan almost become estranged. Dismayed by the Merc with a Mouth’s behavior, Logan goes on a rant, telling him that the Avengers and X-Men rejected him because he lacks strong ideas about societal reform like them. The rent goes on for a few minutes. By the end of it, he has labeled Wade an “attention-starved moron,” and a “jabbering little prick” among other things.
Fighting with Words
Logan makes the right choice by choosing to fight Wade with words instead of adamantium claws. Pain is nothing to Deadpool, so only a dressing down will have any effect on him. For Wade, it ought to concern him that the Avengers and the X-Men admit a high number of people, including less-capable heroes, yet they can’t let him in.
To fans, he might be a hero, but to those who have to bear with his antics every day, he is insufferable. Thankfully, the anger-filled monologue doesn’t lead to the breakup of this fun buddy duo.
6 “Paul Rudd finally aged.” – Deadpool
Paul Rudd’s forever young face has become a running pop culture joke over the years. For over 20 years, the actor’s face has remained the same, leaving fans to wonder whether he truly has special powers like the MCU character he plays. Wade jumps in on the joke too in Deadpool & Wolverine. In a scene where Ant-Man’s giant head opens and reveals a skull, he figures that time has finally caught up with the actor.
No Need To Be Alarmed
According to GQ, Rudd’s youthfulness is tied to moisturizer and sunscreen, but that’s what Wade is referring to. Thanks to Pym Particles, Ant-Man can increase and decrease in size. Here, Wade assumes that he increased in size, grew old, and then died. Ultimately, his giant body turned into a skull. The joke is a perfect way to discuss both Rudd’s looks and the mechanics of Ant-Man’s superpowers. For now, the actor’s fans need not be concerned. Nothing has changed.
5 “I smell what you are stepping in. The power in the Marvel Universe is about to change forever.” – Deadpool
A few years ago, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson vowed to lift the underused Black Adam out of his dead-end DC existence. “The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change,” he said, promising his character would soon be bigger than Batman and Superman.
Well, that didn’t happen. James Gunn took over and chose a new direction, stoking the Hollywood A-lister’s anguish and resentment. Well, Wade makes fun of those developments when Paradox offers him the chance to join the Sacred Timeline (Earth-616).
A Wrestling Catchphrase and an Unfulfilled Promise
“If you smell what The Rock is cooking,” is Dwayne Johnson’s WWE catchphrase, so hearing Wade using a variation of it while shading Johnson is even funnier. His raw desperation is palpable.
Sadly, the opportunity to better himself eventually slips away. Due to a change of circumstances, he doesn’t get to join the Sacred Timeline, but he is right about the power in the Marvel Universe changing. Given how well Deadpool & Wolverine has performed, Deadpool is likely to be one of the franchise’s biggest players going forward.
4 “Flame On!” – Johnny Storm
Wade and Logan become a bit worried when they encounter Cassandra Nova’s goons in the Void. When he spots a mysterious figure who looks like Chris Evans, he immediately assumes it’s Captain America. This gets him excited, and, like a kid, he promises Logan that the man is about to say “Avengers Assemble.” Instead, the figure shouts “Flame On!” It turns out the character is Johnny Storm, aka, The Human Torch. Evans played the character in the 2005 movie, Fantastic Four.
Another Disappointment for the Merc
The original two Fantastic Four movies were poorly received, so no one expected Chris Evans to ever return as the Human Torch. Many assumed that if he was ever going to reappear in the MCU, it would be as a Captain American variant. Nonetheless, fans can appreciate how they get tricked here. Wade’s disappointment is even funnier since he was expecting to be inducted into the Avengers as a matter of urgency, only to be introduced to an inferior hero.
3 “What’s your superpower? Is it parallel parking?” – Deadpool
In the film’s early efforts, Wade Wilson makes a deliberate and protracted effort to join the Avengers. He journeys from his universe, Earth-10005, to Earth-616, where is forced to sit through a tedious interview with Happy Hogan.
During their conversation, Hogan wrestles with the character’s audacity, so he bluntly rejects him, telling him that he cannot join us. He also suggests that Wade is aiming too high. The “Us” angers Wade since Hogan isn’t an Avenger. Accordingly, he mocks him with a follow-up question.
Hogan Is Right
Wade’s words are a cool version of “To hell with you and your job,” but the full conversation proves that Hogan is right to reject him. Wade says he needs the job because he wants to feel better about himself.
Hogan argues that the Avengers don’t do the job because they need it, they do it because people need them. Wade might not be pleased with the feedback, but it changes him for the better. Throughout the film, he focuses more on saving the world instead of chasing personal dreams.

2 “Oh, My F**k! The Cavillrine!” – Deadpool
After being informed that his universe is about to collapse due to the lack of an anchor, Deadpool combs through the multiverse, hoping to find a Wolverine variant that will replace the dead Logan as the new Anchor Being. During the search, he encounters someone who he believes is the perfect hero. Watching him from behind, he comments that the man looks a bit like Henry Cavill and when he turns, he is indeed a variant played by the actor.
Not Interested
Arguably the best among the many cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine, Cavill’s appearance is heartwarming given his DC woes. Having missed out on the chance to play Superman in the long run, he does well, dismissing Wade with a “No, thank you!” before knocking him with a Superman punch.
It’s the ultimate slap in the face to a competitor, and Wade adds weight to it earlier on by promising Cavilllrine that the Marvel team “will treat you so much better than those sh*tf*cks down the street!” Hopefully, this variant will return.
1 “You were always the wrong guy.” – Laura, aka X-23
Humor is Deadpool & Wolverine’s greatest asset, and when jokes aren’t flying around, the characters engage in heart-to-heart conversations. One such conversation features Logan and Laura. When Laura tries to convince him to join Wade on his mission, Logan explains that he is a loser compared to the Fox universe’s version of Wolverine.
The dead Wolverine sacrificed himself for Laura, yet the current Wolverine failed to save the X-Men of his universe. After insisting that he is “the wrong guy,” Laura agrees, telling him that each Wolverine has always been flawed. Despite that, they always get the job done.
A Turning Point
Laura’s words mark a turning point for Deadpool & Wolverine’s Logan. Having battled low self-esteem stemming from his past failures, he ends up feeling recharged and ready to go. He realizes that even though he might not be the Logan that Laura is used to, he is still capable of helping others and doing much more. From there on, he becomes more willing to take risks. Thanks to his renewed enthusiasm, the subsequent adventures become more enjoyable.
