Remakes and reboots are in the air again. You know, those kinds of movies that everyone complains about because, apparently, Hollywood has no more original ideas anymore? Yeah, those. Well, there is going to be an influx of them for the remainder of this year and into next.
2024 has already seen a Mean Girls reboot; a sequel to the Ghostbusters reboot hit theaters a few weeks ago, and Prime Video gave us an updated version of Road House. As long as we pay to see these films or drive the analytics of them up on the streamers, they’re going to keep making them, so just stop watching if it bothers you that much.
We’re a third into the year, and around the corner are some more reboots that actually seem to pull a lot of weight. It’s interesting how markets fluctuate. 2023 saw a lot of original films succeed quite well for audiences. 2024 (and maybe 2025) definitely looks like another year for remakes and reboots. People will definitely see these titles when they are released, whether you like them or not. So let’s dive in.
13 The Fall Guy – May 3rd, 2024
If you did not grow up in the 1980s, the trailer that was recently released in theaters for The Fall Guy may have confused you. The Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt-starring action comedy is actually a remake of a 1980s show. The film follows a stuntman who springs into action to solve the mystery of a movie star who has disappeared.
The Action Comedy of the Summer
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt give us some of the best dramatic performances of the last twenty years, and they also know how to make us laugh. The Fall Guy was an ABC-produced television show that aired from 1981 to 1986. Lee Majors played Colt Seavers, who Gosling will play in the film version. Both the show and the movie seemed to be similar in tone and seems like a great way to kick off the summer.
12 The Garfield Movie – May 24th, 2024
The Garfield Movie
- Release Date
- May 24, 2024
- Studio
- Alcon Entertainment, Columbia Pictures, Paws
Every 20 years, having a Garfield reboot is kind of warranted. The early 2000s saw the release of two Garfield films that were both live-action and animated, and the iconic character was voiced by Bill Murray (a role he would crack a joke about in the film Zombieland). But this summer, The Garfield Movie goes full animation with a new cast of voices to elevate everyone’s favorite lasagna-eating cat.
Chris Pratt as Garfield
Chris Pratt is really trying to corner the market by voicing well-known animated characters in movies. Last year, he gave us his take on what an updated Mario would sound like in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This year, he’s Garfield. Other acting voice contributions include Nicholas Hoult as Garfield owner Jon Arbuckle, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, Ving Rhames, and Cecily Strong.
11 The Crow – June 7th, 2024
The Crow
- Release Date
- June 7, 2024
- Distributor(s)
- Lionsgate
The long-talked-about and criticized remake of 1994’sThe Crow is coming in just a few short months. The tale of soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster, who are brutally murdered one night, and Draven is given a chance to return and seek vengeance on those who wronged him and her. The world of the living and the dead blends in order for him to fix the wrongdoings of the past.
Polarizing, to Say the Least
For many years, Jason Momoa was attached to the title role, but the film could never get off the ground. Now Bill Skarsgard will suit up in the dark clothing and eerie face paint as Eric Draven/The Crow. The trailer does seem intriguing, but many enthusiasts of the original and how amazing it is, while also respecting the legacy of Brandon Lee, who was killed while filming the 1994 classic, have voiced their outrage.
There is a good chance The Crow could be a big box office bomb due to how polarizing the idea of its existence is. Or, people will give it a break; even those who huff and puff about it will still go see it because that’s just part of the fandom. We shall see later this year.
10 Transformers One – September 13th 2024
Transformers One
- Release Date
- September 13, 2024
- Studio
- Entertainment One, Hasbro, Nickelodeon Movies
Transformers One is expected to hit theaters this September. With no trailer being released as this list is being written, fans are eager to see a new, revamped version of a live-action franchise that has wowed us for nearly two decades. However, we do have some plot and casting details to keep you intrigued until more news becomes apparent about the film.
An Origin Story
From what it sounds like, Transformers One will take us back to the days of Cybertron, when Optimus Prime and Megatron go from being allies to sworn enemies. Michael Bay has handed over the title of director, like he did with Rise of the Beasts, to Josh Cooley.
Since this is an origin story as well as a reboot of the franchise, new voice actors have been brought in, like John Hamm, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, and Chris Hemsworth as Optimus Prime. Many feel that with Rise of the Beasts slowly not feeling like the other Michael Bay-directed installments, there is a chance this film could give a whole new look to the Autobots and Decepticons.
9 Speak No Evil – September 13, 2024
2022 saw the release of the Danish horror film, Speak No Evil. It’s about two families who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding, befriend one another, and decide to have a weekend getaway months down the road. Things take a sinister turn for the worse in this bleak horror thriller, which justifies why adults sometimes have their guard up about meeting new people. The film received mixed reactions for its awfully dark ending.
Blumhouse to Produce Speak No Evil American Remake
When it was announced all systems were a go with an American version of the film, horror fans’ ears perked up. Director James Watkins has stepped in to direct the American version of Speak No Evil, with Jason Blum and his Blumhouse banner producing. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis star in the film.
When nihilistic horror from overseas is remade in America, it often times loses what made it a hit internationally, so we shall see if the American version of Speak No Evil can rival its original.
8 The Amateur – November, 8th, 2024
This November will see the release of the espionage thriller, The Amateur. It’s a film about a CIA cryptographer who convinces the agency he works for to let him go out and hunt down the organization responsible for his wife’s murder. The film will be directed by James Hawes, who has a background in directing for television on shows like Black Mirror and Penny Dreadful.
The Amateur Is a Remake of a 1981 Film
Although there is not much to uncover on the internet about the film right now, The Amateur is actually a remake of a 1981 film of the same name. To go a step further, the original film was actually an adaptation of a novel by Robert Littell. Both the film and novel came out the same year. The cast in this remake includes Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, and Laurence Fishburne, to name just a few.
7 Nosferatu – December 25th, 2024
Nosferatu (2024)
- Release Date
- December 25, 2023
Nosferatu is hailed as one of the first horror films of all time upon its 1922 release. With a few remakes between now and then, we get a much-deserved remake of the silent film classic at the end of the year.
Robert Eggers, who has terrified us in ways that have felt both hyper-real and out of a fever dream, has teased us with some remarkable stills of the movie to hold us over till a trailer drops. Nosferatu is the classic retelling of a Transylvania vampire who stalks a haunted young woman in Germany during the 19th century.
The Perfect Cast for a Horror Film
Robert Eggers sure knows how to create an ensemble for a movie of this magnitude. Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and playing the utterly terrifying Count Orlock is Bill Skarsgard. All the stills of the movie tease Skarsgard’s appearance as Count Orlock, as we see his iconic long fingers and long nails but not his face. One can imagine that the film’s first trailer will give us a first look.
6 The Wolf Man (2025)
Blumhouse continues its run of revamping Universal’s coveted Monster movies, as they take on The Wolf Man. Since its initial launch and failure back in 2017, it almost feels fitting that a genre movie production house like Blumhouse would take on the reign of bringing these characters back to life.
However, as this is being written, it was announced that the October 2024 release date has been moved to a later date in early 2025. Yet, we do know that this film is still in production and is planning to be released, so maybe there is no need to really worry.
Another Universal Monster Movie from Leigh Whannell
Back in 2020, Leigh Whannell gave us the unforgettable remake of The Invisible Man. It took the concept and put it into today’s world and all of its problems, giving us incredible scares. Whannell sits (or stands) behind the camera on The Wolf Man reboot, hoping that the feel of it will be the same as his previous monster movie. Initially, Ryan Gosling was attached to play the iconic role but dropped out of production. We will now see Christopher Abbott in the role as well as Ozark’s Julia Garner in the film.
5 How to Train Your Dragon – June 13, 2025
Mark your calendars! Universal Pictures is taking their hit animated franchise (that originated at Paramount Pictures), How to Train Your Dragon, and turning it into a live-action version of the story and the characters we all know and love. Like its competitors, Disney, Universal Pictures, and Dreamworks may be continuing a trend here by taking the big animated stories they are known for and giving us a live-action spectacle for fans of the franchise.
A Slight Delay on Release
Due to last summer’s WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike, How to Train Your Dragon got bumped a bit down the release calendar. However, this film seems to have lined up a great cast. Mason Thames of The Black Phone fame is heading up the cast, along with Nico Parker. In supporting unnamed roles, the film has Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, and Julian Dennison to add to the cast. There is no doubt that a live-action How to Train Your Dragon will draw in a crowd, as the franchise has succeeded incredibly with its animated feature films.
4 Highlander (2025)
“There can only be one!” Highlander has one of the biggest cult followings in terms of a world built inside a film. Some who don’t get it find it corny; others find it the ultimate blend of sword and sorcery that transcends time and space. It’s been a few decades since the last few sequels graced the screen, and now it’s time for a reboot and the perfect casting choice to lead the way.
Henry Cavill Is in it as the Lead
When news broke about Henry Cavill leaving behind the hit Netflix series The Witcher, fans hit the internet in support of the actor. Yet again, Cavill had to leave behind a role many loved him for as Geralt on the show. He was also knee-deep in back-and-forth discussions of whether he would or would not ever return as Superman after Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Cavill may have just landed another brilliant role in the Highlander reboot. The actor feels like the perfect kind of persona to make films like this; he, too, is a massive geek who is into gaming and the world of the characters he plays. Highlander has had a lot of optimism going forward. This reboot has been in development for a decade, and although cameras are not rolling yet, fingers crossed we are going to see this come to fruition.
3 Blade (2025)
The long-awaited return to the big screen for a certain Marvel character is coming soon, we hope. Blade is set for a 2025 release, once again, we hope. Marvel is bringing everyone’s favorite vampire hunter to the big screen. Many don’t know how violent they will make the film, being that it is under the Disney umbrella. One thing is for certain, though: the casting choice for the title role has us all excited.
Mahershala Ali as Blade
Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will wear the dark leather get up to slay some vampires in the MCU’s Blade, and fans can’t help but think that this is a perfect casting choice. If you do a Google search for the movie, there are no plot details, but the cast attached to this film is quite a draw: Mia Goth, Delroy Lindo, and even Jared Leto are attached (Morbius appearance, maybe?).
A lot is still being said about Blade as the release date keeps getting pushed. He is a character that many hold near and dear to them. A lot of fans who love horror movies love that he is joining the MCU. So one can hope Marvel doesn’t botch this one.
2 Superman Legacy – July 11th, 2025
The Man of Steel will return in a film that feels as if it is meant to recharge and propel DC films going forward. It’s also the debut of James Gunn behind the wheel of a theatrical release of a DC film, since he got the job of running this side of things at Warner Bros. Here is what we know so far about Superman Legacy.
What We Know About the New Direction of DC
Superman Legacy, for now, has a broad plot synopsis that states the film will follow a young Clark Kent trying to balance his human and Kryptonian heritage. The cast is pretty much set, with David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
James Gunn has never really failed us in terms of superhero I.P., but he has been criticized by many for ripping the band-aid off and telling fans that things are starting over at DC, and if it fails, it fails. Out with the old, in with the new, and Superman Legacy, which is now believed to be in production, is doing just that.
1 The Fantastic Four – July 25th, 2025
Marvel’s first family is back! By the time 2025 comes around, it will be 10 years since we got a Fantastic Four film. There is potential that this one will be in good hands this time around, as it takes place within the confines of the MCU. There are no plot details or trailer for the movie, but a great cast and director have assembled to helm the project.
The New and Improved Fantastic Four
To play Marvel’s first family is none other than Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. Director Matt Shakman, whose work on Wandavision has received high praise, has stated that the film will begin shooting in spring 2024 for its July 25th, 2025 release date.
