15 Years Later, (500) Days of Summer Director Reveals How They Pulled Off Iconic Star Wars Cameo

“I was very close to the feelings that Tom was feeling,” Webb says, recalling his experience of romance and how deeply he felt the wounds surrounding love. “I have a deep empathy for people who have been in that situation. It’s painful and nostalgic at the same time.”

Webb revealed that he most identified with the film’s final line, which embodies the theme of how heartbreak can be rewarding to look back on once peace is finally found. While the film navigates the highs and lows of relationship drama, the famously uplifting scene set to Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams Come True” hits home for anyone who’s ever been in love. After finally spending the night with Summer for the first time, Tom feels like he’s on top of the world. “There were a lot of rights at the time,” Webb tells The Daily Beast. Although Webb was nervous about how this high-profile film would develop, it received general acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, and “people turned on it.”

Although the story is told from Tom's point of view, many scenes depict the differences between Summer's and Tom's perceptions of a shared experience. While Tom feels as if he is walking on sunlight the morning after spending the night with Summer, we know little about Summer's feelings that same morning. As the film progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that Summer does not feel the same way about Tom.

One of the most memorable scenes in the film comes when Tom gifts Summer a book on architecture at her party in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. “I don’t know if there’s a right or wrong answer to that question. I’ve had dreams where there was a scene that was missing from my own life, and that was helpful. It closes the bridge and ties up the disconnected parts. I find Samar to be virtuous and generous and thoughtful in that scene, and I don’t want to take that from the character and say it’s all in Tom’s head,” he continues, “but I don’t mind that interpretation. It’s art and you can interpret it however you want.”
