It's official. Brendan Gleeson is set to play a lead role in Amazon's upcoming live-action series Spider-Man Noir.
diverse It was exclusively announced in July based on sources that Gleeson would be part of the show, but his role has only now been fully confirmed. Exact details of Gleeson's character are still under wraps, but he is believed to be playing the main villain.
Gleeson will star alongside Nicolas Cage, who stars in the series, which is currently titled “Spider-Noir.” Other cast members include Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, and Lee Jun Li. As previously reported, the series will debut domestically on MGM+ linear channel and then globally on Amazon Prime Video.
According to the official synopsis, the show “tells the story of an aging, down-on-his-luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York who is forced to deal with his past life as the city's only superhero.”
This is one of Gleeson's first announced projects since his Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” In addition to his many critically acclaimed film roles, Gleeson has been part of several successful television shows in the past few years. These include the crime drama “Mr. Mercedes,” which was based on Stephen King's Bill Hodges series of novels, as well as the Showtime miniseries “The Comey Rule,” in which Gleeson played President Donald Trump. Gleeson also won an Emmy in 2009 for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the television movie “Into the Storm.” In film, aside from “Banshees of Inisherin,” Gleeson is known for his roles in films such as “In Bruges,” “The Guard,” “Cavalry,” and multiple appearances in the “Harry Potter” series, “Braveheart,” and “Gangs of New York.”

“Spider-Noir” is written by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who will also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. They developed the series with the “Into the Spider-Verse” team of Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, who will all also serve as executive producers. Harry Bradbeer will executive produce and direct the first two episodes. Pascal will executive produce via Pascal Pictures, while Lord and Miller will executive produce via Lord Miller. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, with Lord Miller currently under an overall deal with Sony.
“Spider-Noir” was the second show announced under a partnership between Amazon and Sony to develop projects around Marvel characters related to Spider-Man that Sony controls. The first was “Silk: Spider Society,” which was originally greenlit in 2022, but it was reported that the show would not move forward at Amazon in May.
