Britney Spears Reacts to Sabrina Carpenter’s VMA Performance

Sabrina Carpenter's performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night saw her kiss an alien, much to the confusion of Britney Spears. The singer took to Instagram yesterday to respond to Carpenter's dynamic medley of “Please, Please, Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso,” which saw her honor Spears multiple times.

In a video posted to her Instagram account, Spears explained that she did not watch the VMAs, but she did watch clips of the show online. “Did you guys watch the VMAs? I didn't watch the VMAs, but I watched clips of Sabrina Carpenter's video on my phone from YouTube. Why is she kissing an alien on stage? I adore her. I love her to death. I didn't get that part. Why didn't she kiss a girl? It was weird,” Spears said in the video.

“But I also thought the whole thing was kind of weird… This girl Sabrina, she said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was kind of cool, because I forget that I’m famous sometimes because I’m a mom, I’m kind of old, etc. But I thought it was kind of cool, this girl Sabrina, Carpenter. She said something, and I was like, ‘Thanks, that’s cool!’ She made me cool.”

Carpenter took to the stage for a spacey performance at the VMAs before winning Song of the Year for his song “Espresso.”

“I’ve never won one of these,” the singer said upon accepting the award. “This is really special. The first people I want to thank are my fans. If you clap after everything I say, they’re going to call me to leave the stage, so just a moment. But I just want to say that you guys are the reason I do what I love, but also the reason we have so much fun and share music with each other. I feel so grateful to have the best fans in the world. I know it sounds cliché, but I love you.”

Spears famously kissed Madonna and Christina Aguilera on stage at the Video Music Awards in 2003. On Wednesday night, several artists paid tribute to Spears alongside Carpenter, including host Megan Thee Stallion, who wore a replica of Spears' 2001 “I'm a Slave to You” costume complete with a yellow snake.
