Pearl Jam appeared on CBS' Sunday Morning over the weekend to talk about their career and latest album, Dark matterThe morning show also featured an exclusive live performance clip of “Even Flow,” which was filmed at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, Montana, on August 22 as part of the band’s current Dark Matter world tour.
In the interview, lead singer Eddie Vedder and guitarist Jeff Ament discussed the band's longevity and how their writing process has remained similar over the years. Vedder said, “Almost everything I've ever written has always started with a tissue. Now it's tissues, because we stay in better hotels!”
He also compared writing lyrics to surfing. “You put these basic blocks together, so you can form the perfect wave, you know, which is two turns, then a barrel, and then “The words come — the words come from riding that wave,” he said.
The musicians talked about how the band has managed to stay together for so long, with Ament noting that “it's miraculous that we've made it in some ways. It's also just a testament to our friendship.” Vedder added, “I was going to say, a good, clean life.”
During the interview, Vedder also opened up about Pearl Jam's setlists, telling CBS Sunday Morning that he works hard on them all, choosing songs from a massive catalogue that includes “a lot of songs we've played at once.” He added that sometimes it takes him a “ridiculously long time” to write out the setlists, which he writes by hand. “It keeps me focused and entertained,” he said.

They embarked on a world tour in support of the new album in May, including a stop at Bottle Rock in Napa Valley where Bradley Cooper joined the band on stage to perform “Maybe It's Time” from his film Birth of a StarThe band is scheduled to perform at the Ohana Festival later this month before heading to New Zealand and Australia.
