Christina Aguilera celebrated the 25th anniversary of her eponymous debut album at Spotify Music Studios in Los Angeles this week and took the opportunity to collaborate with Sabrina Carpenter and Machine Gun Kelly.
During the “Live Spotify Anniversaries” episode, Aguilera called on Carpenter to perform her hit song “What a Girl Wants,” with Carpenter opening the song before they shared vocals. Machine Gun Kelly joined them on guitar for a performance of “Genie in a Bottle,” another of Aguilera's hits.
“I was terrified,” Carpenter admitted as she sat with Aguilera on stage, sharing her memories of Aguilera’s music before their performance. “I think the first time I heard your voice was [when] “My mom showed me a video of you singing ‘Sunday Love’ at eight years old,” Carpenter recalled. “That was the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen as a little girl who wanted to sing, but didn’t think I could do it at that age.”
The 26-minute clip also saw Aguilera reunite with producer Ron Fair and songwriter Heather Holly, who worked on the original album. Holly and Aguilera joined together to perform “Obvious,” a song the duo wrote together more than 25 years ago.
Aguilera will also release a six-track EP, recorded at Spotify's Mateo Studios in Los Angeles. Christina AguileraThe album “Genie in a Bottle”, released in 1999, earned the musician a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2000, and included hits such as “Genie in a Bottle”, “What a Girl Wants” and “I Turn to You”.
“I wanted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my first album in a way that combined the past and the present,” Aguilera said. Rolling Stone “I've always enjoyed reimagining my songs for different styles and audiences, as well as playing with sounds and arrangements that show how timeless music can be.”
“Recording this project with Spotify was magical and nostalgic, bringing back some of the best memories of my career,” she added. “I laughed, I cried, I reconnected with old friends, and I made some very special new ones. I hope this anniversary gift is as special to you as it was to me.”
