Transformer One Filmmakers Reveal Why Chris Hemsworth Had to Play Optimus Prime in Prequel

A groan of disappointment could be heard emanating from every transformers I was impressed when the Marvel star was announced. Chris Hemsworth He will take over the role of Optimus Prime from franchise icon Peter Cullen. But, while many had doubts about the Thor actor's ability to bring the same gravitas to the Autobot leader, Transformers One Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has now explained to GamesRadar+ why this change was necessary for the prequel.

Peter Cullen will still be part of the film franchise. But the idea behind this film is that Peter was old.

You had to have that youthful vitality and naivety, which is what young people have. But at the same time, we wanted to find an actor [where] “You can believe that voice could be Peter Cullen's voice when they grow up. Chris has had that kind of low voice from the beginning, you know? That was the hope, that we would find an actor who had both of those skills. And we were lucky to get Chris.”

in Transformers OneOptimus Prime is not yet known by that name, but instead is known as Orion Puck. While it’s hard to imagine anyone else voicing the character, the constant passage of time seems to have been the problem, with this younger version requiring more youthful voices than the 83-year-old Cullen can provide. Director Josh Cooley echoed those sentiments, praising Hemsworth’s contribution to the beloved character.

“He has to have a different kind of personality. A little bit of flexibility and fun to him, someone who isn’t polite yet… Talking to [Chris] “For the character, it became clear that a lot of Orion Buck was Chris. He would read the lines and say, ‘Let me try it this way’ and it would come out naturally.”

Chris Hemsworth draws 'motivation and inspiration' from Peter Cullen

More shots from Transformers One It was revealed that Hemsworth will draw some inspiration from Colin, as classic lines like “more than meets the eye” sound very similar to the famous voice actor. While discussing taking on the role with Comicbook.com at SDCC, Hemsworth offered some insight into his approach, saying…

“It’s very hard to have a lot of humor and youthful banter in Peter Cullen’s rhythm. At the end of the movie when he turns into Optimus Prime, we start to lean into that, but I never wanted to imitate that anyway. I use him as an influence and a motivator and an inspiration, but what Peter Cullen did was so creative and so brilliant, I’ll leave that on the shelf as something to look forward to and honor.”
