However, Tatum was determined to get the voice right, and director Shawn Levy Now reveal the work that went into Gambit's distinctive voice.




Levy spoke to Variety after the release of Deadpool and Wolverine In a spoiler-filled conversation, Levy revealed exactly where Tatum's voice came from in the film. In the comics, Gambit (also known as Remy Etienne LeBeau) is a New Orleans native who speaks Cajun English and Louisiana French. Tatum embraced this in his performance, delivering some funny lines, with the line “I'm about to make a name for myself here” already becoming an internet meme..

Much of the character's comedy also comes from entire lines of dialogue getting lost in the thick accent. Levy has now revealed that this was always intentional, but Tatum took the voice to a whole new level. The director said:


“We wrote a lot of those lines that didn’t make sense. We wrote them into the script. But then Channing added a lot of Cajun and French flavors. To this day, there are some things he says — like when he sees Hugh drinking and throws a loaded card in his face, he says something that’s very much like ‘cooyain-zwah’ — where I don’t know the words.”

“When Deadpool kept saying, ‘That’s not a word. Who’s your dialect coach… Minions?’ That was all of us on set. We absolutely loved that.”

It's no secret to comic book fans how long Channing Tatum has been associated with Gambit. The actor has officially been cast in the film. Gambit The film was originally set to be released in 2014. But after several directors met with the actor (including Shawn Levy) and some dropped out of the project, the film was eventually shelved when Disney bought back the rights to the X-Men characters. During the conversation, Levy discussed Tatum's history with Gambit. The director revealed that Tatum's performance is one of his favorite parts, and he's happy to have been able to give the actor the long-awaited vindication he deserved. Levy said:

“I’m obsessed with Channing as Gambit in this movie. The first thing that happened in this movie was Channing had wanted to play this role for ten years and a decade Channing was going to play this role at Fox. I know this personally because in those years I was one of 25 different directors who met with Channing about doing Gambit for Fox, but it never happened. So when we decided to make Gambit in this movie, we knew it would be very satisfying for Channing.”
