A Simple Favor is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Darcey Bell, and it follows a small-town vlogger named Stephanie (Kendrick) who tries to solve the disappearance of her elegant and mysterious best friend Emily (Lively). Marketed in the same style as Gone Girl, the film played like a traditional missing woman mystery thriller before completely turning things on its head during the third act in a very funny and clever way. The film also cemented Henry Golding as a star to watch, coming out just one month after his breakthrough role in Crazy Rich Asians.
