“Alien: Romulus” topped the South Korean box office over the weekend with five new titles in the top 10.
The American horror thriller grossed $3.47 million between Friday and Sunday, taking a 28 percent market share, data from Kobis, a tracking service run by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), showed. “Romulus: The Alien” grossed $5.46 million over its five-day opening.
Those numbers were enough to push “Pilot,” the Korean comedy-drama that has topped the box office for the past two weeks, into second place, and the bountiful returns from new films pushed the weekend’s domestic box office total to $12.4 million.
“Pilot” grossed $2.73 million over its final weekend, for a three-week total of $26.7 million. That’s the fourth-highest gross for any Korean film so far this year, and puts “Wonka” in fifth place in 2024.
The new Korean film “Happyland” opened in third place with $1.57 million over the weekend. The film has grossed $3.12 million over five days. The film is the latest cinematic study of the political turmoil in Korea in the late 1970s, the same backdrop explored by last year’s No. 1 film “12.12: The Day.”
“Twisters” was third on the list of new films that topped the box office over the weekend. The film earned a modest $1.61 million and had a 9.3% market share between Friday and Sunday. Its total revenue was $2.17 million from its five-day opening and preview screenings a week ago.
The Korean animated film “Heartsping: Teenieping of Love” dropped from second place in its opening weekend to fifth place over the last weekend. The film earned $854,000 for a 12-day total of $4.52 million.
“Victory,” a Korean comedy-drama about cheerleading that premiered last month at the New York Asian Film Festival, took sixth place. The film grossed $636,000 over the weekend and $1.36 million over five days.
The concert film “Seventeen Tour 'Follow' Again to Cinemas” opened at No. 7, based on its $339,000 weekend gross. Domestic charts, which rank performances by admissions instead, show it at No. 10. It now has a total of $843,000, earned from 45,000 K-pop fans.
“Despicable Me” grossed $300,000 in eighth place over its last weekend. Its four-week total has reached $10.2 million, making it the 14th highest-grossing film in Korea so far this year.
“Inside Out 2” was the highest-grossing film in South Korea this year, earning $195,000. Since its release on June 12, the film has grossed $62.6 million.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” didn’t seem to last long. It made $188,000 over the weekend, and its total since its July 24 release (the same day as “Despicable Me 4”) has reached $15 million.
