Aerosmith has played its last concerts. The band announced Friday that it has canceled all remaining dates and is officially retiring from touring, because singer Steven Tyler is “no longer able to recover from his vocal injury.”
“It has been a great honor in our lives to have our music become part of yours,” the band announced in a post on social media that read like a farewell statement.
The group had already begun what was advertised as a final trek — the “Peace Out… Farewell Tour” — when their road trips came to a halt after what turned out to be a final concert in Elmont, New York on September 9, 2023. The group performed just three dates on that tour, which was supposed to run through February 2024, before postponing — and now, finally, canceling — the remaining dates.
While the statement did not mention whether there was any hope that Tyler would be able to overcome his problems to the point where he would be able to record future albums, the band appeared to have long since retired from making records. Their last album, Music from Another Dimension!, was released in 2012. Tyler then released a solo album in 2016.
“1970 was the year that the spark of inspiration for the band Aerosmith began. Thanks to you, our Blue Army, that spark was ignited and has burned for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and you are all the reason we have made rock and roll history.
“It has been such an honor to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every huge tour and in every great and special moment, you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.
“We have always wanted to amaze you when we perform. As you know, Stephen’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months working tirelessly to restore his voice to what it was before his injury. We have seen him struggle despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made the heartbreaking, difficult, but necessary decision, as a band of brothers, to retire from touring theatre.
“We are so grateful to everyone who was excited to hit the road with us one last time. Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who made our historic tours possible. And a final thank you to you – the best fans on the planet. Play our music loud, now and always. Keep dreaming. You made our dreams come true.
