Marmaduke 2013's 43 — films with 9% and 5% reviews from critics, respectively — is Stone's worst film among critics. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong; it's hard to imagine a world in which a Crowe-directed film starring Cooper, Stone, John Krasinski, Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, and Bill Murray could fail like this. To be fair, Aloha The film is very messy and can be difficult to follow at times. However, if you're watching it hoping for a good performance from Stone, she does. The relationship between Cooper, Stone, and McAdams, who plays Cooper's ex-wife, is the highlight of the film. The subplot involving Bill Murray's character trying to put a satellite into space is completely irrelevant, and it feels like a waste of Murray's presence in the first place, as he's given very little to do.


Letterboxd Users Hate The Movie, But They Still Love Emma Stone


Stone is rarely the weak link in a film, and that is the case here. Many recent reviews of the film Aloha On Letterboxd, users highlight its performances as outstanding, and the cast in general, while noting that the film’s story is what led to its failure. The most common complaints relate to the nonsensical plot, while only Stone and the bizarre telepathy scene involving Krasinski and Cooper consistently receive praise. Overall, the film has a poor score on Letterboxd with an average rating of just 2.2, making it one of the worst films on the platform.

There was a lot of negative feedback about Stone's character at the time of the film's release. Crowe was accused of whitewashing the character, who is of Hawaiian and Chinese descent. The director responded to the criticism on his blog:


“Thank you so much for all the passionate comments regarding the casting of the wonderful actress Emma Stone as Allison Ng. I hear your words and your disappointment, and I offer my sincere apologies to anyone who felt this casting was strange or misguided. Since 2007, Captain Allison Ng of Hawaii should have been very proud and disappointed because, by all appearances, she does not look like her at all.”

At the time of writing, Aloha This was Crowe's last feature film. The only thing she has been associated with since then is a documentary about David Crosby that she produced. However, this failure had no effect on Stone, who has won two Best Actress Oscars since the film's release.
