AMC Acquires French Pandemic Drama ‘The Plague’ for Portugal, Spain


The French pandemic drama “The Plague”, based on Albert Camus' novel “The Plague”, has sold out in several European territories, diverse I have learned.

The series was sold to AMC Networks International Southern Europe where it will launch on SundanceTV in Spain and AMC in Portugal while Proximus acquired the series for Belgium. It premiered in France on France 2 in March, immediately topping the ratings. It was also selected for the French Drama Festival in Korea, where it will premiere on September 9.

The four-part series is directed by Antoine Garceau (“Call My Agent”), and stars Frédéric Pierrot (“In Treatment”), Hugo Becker (“Gossip Girl”), Sofia Essaidi (“Women at War”), Judith Chemla (“Of Money and Blood”), and Johan Heldenberg (“Alabama Monroe”).

The film follows a disparate group of people who find themselves grappling personally and professionally with a new virus that threatens the planet. Among them are Dr. Rieux (Pierreau), a rebellious hero who risks his life to fight the disease; Sylvain Rambert (Baker), a journalist torn between love and duty; whistleblower Laurence Molinier (Saidi); Lucie Ferrière (Shimla), a pianist and fighter; and Jeanne Tarroux (Heldenberg), Dr. Rieux’s mysterious ally.

Executive producer Georges-Marc Benamou and screenwriter Gilles Tauran adapt Camus' classic 1947 novel, updating it with a contemporary setting.

The series was produced by Siècle Productions (Voltaire in Love).
