Outtakes from original David LaChapelle-directed shoot unearthed to mark the U.K. release of the biopic Back to Black
Ahead of the release of the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black in the U.K. this weekend, the singer’s “Tears Dry on Their Own” has been re-uploaded onto YouTube with a visual featuring previously unseen footage from the single’s original music video shoot.
Like the recently rereleased video for “In My Bed” — which arrived earlier this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Winehouse’s 2004 debut album Frank — the new “Tears Dry on Their Own” visual combines the original clip with never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes, in this case, taken from the official David LaChapelle-directed music video shoot in Los Angeles back in 2007.
“Tears Dry on Their Own” is among the half-dozen Winehouse songs on the soundtrack for Back to Black. The soundtrack features three Frank songs, three Back to Black tracks, five songs by artists that inspired Winehouse (Billie Holiday, the Shangri-La’s, Minnie Riperton, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington), and a new Nick Cave song titled “Song for Amy”; Cave and his longtime collaborator Warren Ellis also scored the biopic.
“Nick and Warren were the only musicians in my mind to score Back to Black,” director Sam Taylor-Johnson recently wrote on social media. “Over the years, I’ve listened to everything they’ve composed and longed to realize the dream of working together. Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score.”
Back to Black is set to open in the U.S. on May 17 — the same day as the soundtrack’s release — with Marisa Abela starring as Winehouse. The cast also features Jack O’Connell as Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil; Lesley Manville as Winehouse’s grandmother, Cynthia; Eddie Marsan as her father, Mitch; and Juliet Cowan as her mother, Janis. The movie was made with support from the Winehouse estate.
