Animated DC Series Unveiled at Comic-Con

DC Studios co-president James Gunn revealed his new cinematic universe at San Diego Comic-Con, starting with the first trailer for the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos.” It was also announced at Comic-Con for a December release. The series was first announced in January 2023, with Gunn entirely writing Max’s seven-episode order.

The Creature Commando characters, a team of military superhumans, first hit the page in 1980. The original premise follows Frankenstein's monster teaming up with a giant werewolf, a vampire, and a gorgon to fight the Nazis in World War II. The TV version adds Gunn's Weasel, a character from Gunn's “The Suicide Squad” (2021), and Rick Flag Sr. as part of the Commandos.

The series' voice cast includes David Harbour, Indira Varma, Alan Tudyk, Maria Bakalova, Zoe Zhao, Steve Agee, and more. Varma voices the Bride of Frankenstein; Frank Grillo voices Rick Flagg Sr.; Harbour voices Eric Frankenstein, a version of the classic monster and the Bride's lover; Zhao voices Nina Mazursky, an amphibious scientist; Sean Gunn voices G.I. Robot, a military robot; and Tudyk voices Doctor Phosphorus.

Sean Gunn also reprises his role as Weasel from The Suicide Squad, and Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller, who she has played since 2016's Suicide Squad. Davis is also set to star in a Max spinoff film called Peacemaker titled Waller.

When Jean and Safran announced the first 10 titles in the new DC Universe at a press conference last year, they confirmed that nearly all of the actors who voice characters in the animated series would also portray those characters if they appeared in a future live-action DC production. Grillo will transition to live-action to play Rick Flag Sr. in the second season of “Peacemaker.”
