Anitta has been talking about her upcoming funk album for weeks — and it finally has a date.
On Thursday night, the Brazilian star announced that she’ll release her album Funk Generation on April 26, which will feature her Botlok-produced song “Double Team” with Brray and Bad Gyal.
“Funk Generation is an album where I celebrate my roots. It’s where I express the power of Rio’s funk in every track its unique, danceable, and sensual beats,” she said in a press release. “It’s a rhythm born in the favelas, where I grew up, and it exudes resistance and art in every community.”
“I’m proud to work on a project about a genre that has been unfairly stigmatized in Brazil but is slowly gaining recognition worldwide,” she added. “On the album, I bring in important collaborations that helped me tell this story. I’ve been involved in every step of the production and visual direction, and I’ve achieved the result I’ve been aiming for.”
On the track, Anitta repeats the line “Soy bien puta,” or “I’m such a whore” in English over an electronic-funk-fusion beat. The experimentation with sound is intentional: the singer opened up to Rolling Stone about the “artistic-alternative” vibes she was going for on the LP.
“It’s not a mainstream of Latin because it’s funk. It’s not in the mainstream of the English world,” she said. “When you’re just trying to beat this person, beat that chart, beat that number, you don’t have a purpose.… And for me, it’s way more. I want to open doors for my people.”
“Let’s just live life appreciating everything, not thinking, ‘How am I going to get something from this?’ ” she added at the time. “Just doing things because you want to — that’s the message I’m going to send with this album.”
The new track follows Anitta’s recent collaborations. She joined Justin Quiles on “Faldas y Gistros” and Bad Gyal on “Bota Niña.” She also dropped “Mil Vezes” with Melody in January.
