like Pachinko Back for a second season on Apple TV+The story of Soonja (Minha Kim) takes a step forward in time. The Emmy-nominated hit series follows four generations of the Baek family, between 1910 and 1989. Set across multiple time periods, the series features Kim portraying the younger version of Soonja, the matriarch of the Baek family, during the 1930s and 1940s. The first season follows Soonja as she immigrates from Korea to Japan, The second season moves to one of the most important years in Japanese history, 1945..
In an exclusive interview with MovieWebMinha Kim explained the time jump in the show, and how she prepared to play an older version of her character in the new season. Kim explained that Soonja was used to the hardships of survival in Japan, especially after raising her two sons without her husband. Even near the end of World War II, Soonja was used to having to fight to survive, so much so that she remained strong as the war reached Japan's home front. However, Soonja is not completely independent in season 2, as she unexpectedly meets Hansoo (Lee Min Ho).Minha Kim said:
“There's a huge time jump… so I tried to melt those times. [periods] In my character, while maintaining the character that appeared in the first season. But I had to make it different… I felt that it [becoming] She got stronger, she got deeper… But when World War II started, and all this chaos, and all the terrible things that happened around her, again, she was used to surviving… She thought [about] How to survive, how to protect [her] The family. At that moment, Hanso appears, leading [her] Family to the countryside.”

When Sonja starts a new life for herself and her children in Japan during the first season, a large shadow looms over her… the shadow of her old lover (and father of her first child), Hanso. Unlike Sonja, who must fight to feed her children, Hanso uses his vast wealth and influence to secretly monitor and control Sonja and her son Noa. Season 2 delves deeper into their relationship. The couple also met again at the end of World War II.

As season two reveals the many layers of their relationship, Minha Kim explains the conversations she had with co-star Lee Min Ho about their new on-screen character dynamicsKim explained that despite Sonja's disdain for Hanso, their son brought them closer together when they escaped bombing by American soldiers and fled to the countryside. Kim said:
“beginning [and] In season two, there was a lot of conversation about their new relationship. In season two, their relationship wasn't just about romantic love, but I think they became more like a family in season two, because they have a child… and they continue to have conversations about how to raise their children. [Noa]So, Min Ho and I had a lot of conversations about this… and besides, we share our feelings, [what] We think about our characters. I have this love for Hansoo.
