Barack and Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Kamala Harris for President of the United States.
The former president broke the news in a post on Twitter on Friday, writing: “Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend @KamalaHarris. We told her we think she would be an amazing President of the United States, and that she has our full support. At this critical moment for our country, we will do everything we can to make sure she wins in November. We hope she will join us.”
The post included a video of Harris receiving the call from the Obamas. “Hey, you two together!” Harris said as she answered the phone.
“I can't make this phone call without saying to my friend Kamala, 'I'm proud of you. This is going to be historic,'” Michelle said.
If elected, Harris would not only be the first woman to serve as president, but also the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent.
“We called to say that Michelle and I could not be more proud to endorse you and do everything we can to help you get through this election and into the Oval Office,” Barack added.
“Oh my gosh. Michelle and Barack, this means so much to me,” Harris replied. “I’m looking forward to doing this with you, Doug and I, and getting out and being on the road. But most of all, I just want to let you know that the words you’ve said and the friendship you’ve given over all these years means more than I can ever express. So thank you. This means so much. And we’re going to enjoy this too, right?”
After incumbent President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on Sunday, Harris appears set to become the Democratic nominee to face Donald Trump in his bid for re-election. When Biden announced his withdrawal, he immediately endorsed Harris — but the Obamas did not, raising questions about when the endorsement would come.
