As a result, Burton said he had an amazing amount of freedom to experiment with his vision for Gotham City and Batman. He explained:
“I was lucky that the word ‘franchise’ didn’t exist at the time. So I felt like ‘Batman’ was a little bit experimental at the time. … It deviated from the concept of [of a superhero movie] Maybe so. So we didn't hear that kind of reaction from the studio, and because we're in England, it was beyond that. We were really focused on the movie and we didn't really think about the things that they're thinking about now even before you did it.
