The long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton's 1988 classic is finally here, but before it does, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The film will be shown in cinemas on September 6, starring: Michael Keaton He mocks this second outing. Much stronger than the first in terms of story.Keaton stars in the film as the eponymous ghost, reprising the role that helped make him famous more than 35 years ago. The film also stars returning actresses Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara, along with newcomers Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci.
Speaking to Total Film (via GamesRadar), Keaton said that Burton's new film has a “stronger story” than the 1988 original. That's saying something, as sequels tend to be weaker than their predecessors in most cases, with a few exceptions. Keaton explained why he makes such a bold claim, adding: “There's more connection for the audience in terms of the other characters.”
Burton has a heavy task to do. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice A nostalgic work, balancing old and new for two generations of moviegoers: one who grew up on his first film, and another who is experiencing his world for the first time. When it came time to put on the pinstripe suit, Keaton said he was pleasantly surprised by what the sequel was trying to achieve, noting that what Burton had created made it easier not to rely too heavily on nostalgia.
There are things here that I wasn't prepared for, and they're just so cool. Instead of being like, “I can't wait for this thing to come out,” or “I just want this Beetlejuice thing to go crazy.”
Beetlejuice is like opening Tim Burton's head
Before Burton directed Beetlejuice In 1988, he had directed just one more film: the hilarious comedy that was later released as a Saturday morning children's show, Pee Wee's Great AdventureWhile this movie was somewhat based on reality, Beetlejuice It was a supernatural story unlike anything we'd seen before, with stunning visuals, unusual characters, and a story that leaned toward the strange and unusual.
It's certainly a tough act to follow, but newcomer Justin Theroux — who plays Winona Ryder's husband in the new film — says Burton created something that “required some pretty big changes,” and that stepping onto the set was like stepping into a dream straight from a mad creative mind, not a studio movie.
“There are fantasies that feel out of control and out of balance. It has that feeling. This movie was clearly not made with audience polls, studio notes, executives asking, ‘Well, what’s the most satisfying third act?’ It’s like someone opened the front of Tim Burton’s head and let it fall out onto the screen. It’s a great ride for that very reason.”
