“He changed it on his own. He probably came to the conclusion that there was nothing there,” Sean said of the deleted lyrics to “Element” that appeared in a 2019 leak.
American rappers Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar cleared up their years-long feud in a lengthy interview with Charlamagne The God podcast that aired Friday.
Talking to Charlamagne a week before his upcoming album releases I am better than youShawn returns to Lamar's criticism of a version of Lamar the curse In 2019, a clip from the song “Element” was leaked in which Lamar suggested that Sean was more famous for his love life than his rap career. Lamar removed this verse from the final version of the album, which was released in 2017.
“That song came out and he changed that verse, it’s not in the song anymore, it was a leaked verse,” Sean said. “I had to take that into consideration because I was so mad when I heard it. He changed it on his own. He probably came to the conclusion that it was nothing.”
Sean then showed Charlamagne a text thread between him and Lamar in which the two rappers talked more about the track.
“He apologized for it because he went that far,” Sean said. “And when that information came out, people said, ‘Oh, did you hear what he said about you?’ I’m not some jerk looking for influence, I’m standing my ground. We’ve already talked about it, and I’ve already gotten an apology for it.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Sean recalled his early days of depression and doubts about whether he would make it as a rapper, so he applied to community college as a backup plan instead.
“I remember my mom saying, ‘What are you doing?’ and that was a defining moment,” Sean says, choking up as he remembers his mom pushing him to pursue his dreams. “Anything could have happened. I’m grateful to have these guardian angels in my life like my mom.”
