BioShock Adaptation Will Be a ‘More Personal’ Movie Thanks to Budget Cuts

Despite being announced in 2022, there hasn't been much news about a movie adaptation of the popular video game, Bioshockwhich was picked up by Netflix as an original for streaming. However, thanks to producer Roy Lee, we now know that the film is still in production, But with a budget that will be much lower than previously thought.Lee was present at SDCC to share the news yesterday, which comes on the heels of the recent restructuring at Netflix.

According to the variety, new Bioshock The movie still has hunger GamesFrancis Lawrence is attached to direct (he's currently busy filming an adaptation of Stephen King's novel, long walk), but thanks to a recent regime change at Netflix that saw Dan Lin take over from Scott Stuber as the streaming service's head of film, the film will be made on a much smaller scale. Lee says that Bioshock It will now become a “more personal” film.

The new system has cut budgets, so we're working on a much smaller version. It'll be a more personal perspective, rather than a larger, more grandiose project.

This move comes as a result of Netflix's efforts to cut costs and not spend a lot on original shows, which may or may not bode well. BioshockWith such a rich universe and stunning visuals, the movie would have relied heavily on computer animation to bring it to life (and probably will continue to do so), which would have taken away from the story's focus on expensive graphics. Just look at the description of the original game to see that.

“The game follows the player character Jack, who discovers the underwater city of Rapture, built by business magnate Andrew Ryan as a utopian isolated city. The discovery of ADAM, a genetic material that grants superpowers, has sent the city into turmoil. Jack attempts to escape Rapture, battling its mutated and mechanical inhabitants, while connecting with the few remaining sane survivors and learning about the city's past.”

They're making the wrong BioShock movie.

There is no denying it. Bioshock It's going to be an impressive movie once the cameras finally start rolling, but honestly, they're making the wrong movie. Sure, Bioshock The Last Hope had a huge impact when it was released in 2007 by borrowing heavily from Ayn Rand's philosophies, but the world was different then, and the overall story may not resonate with viewers in today's society.

2013 Bioshock InfiniteThe game, and its main character, Booker DeWitt, would have been the subject of an adaptation if the filmmakers really wanted to make a strong impact today. Filled with themes of patriotism, white supremacy, class warfare, fascism, and religious bigotry, the game feels like it was taken straight from the headlines of 2024, and would have provided more relevant social commentary.
