Black Mass Is Finally on Netflix, but It Leaves Out 6 Major Details

Johnny Depp's Mafia Movie 2015, Black MassFinally, “The Last Man” is available on Netflix. The crime drama follows the life of notorious mafia boss James “Whitey” Bulger, who served as the longtime leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang before going into hiding to avoid a RICO indictment. Depp plays the character with conviction and passion. Aside from him, the film boasts a great supporting cast that includes Jesse Plemons, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, and Corey Stoll.

Depp is no stranger to gangster films, having played drug dealer George Jung in blows, Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger public enemiesand undercover FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie BrascoHe does well here too, his work complemented by gorgeous sets and a moving script.

The film also captures most of the details related to the gangster's life. After all, it is based on Black Mass: The True Story of the Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mafia Written by investigative journalists Dick Lear and Gerard O'Neill, it's unfortunate that some details are left out, details that could have made the story better, and pushed the film to the pinnacle of its genre.

6 Details of Bulger's arrest

entertaining like Black Mass It is highly condensed. Viewers left baffled after Bulger goes into hidingWhich is unfortunate considering how much happened after that. In 2011, Bulger was caught after 16 years on the run. At the time, he was second only to Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, and like the al-Qaeda leader, he knew how to stay under the radar. So what did he finally reveal? ABC News reported that Bulger was caught after 16 years on the run. The FBI was able to trace the serial numbers of his girlfriend Katherine Gregg's breast implants to a plastic surgeon's office..

It would be nice to have a sequel.

Considering that the film was released four years after Bulger’s arrest, there’s no excuse for leaving out such an important detail. Director Scott Cooper may have been afraid to over-lengthen the film, but that’s not a bad thing. Many of the greatest gangster films are known for pushing the audience to the edge of their seats. Some stories are just too good to finish too quickly.

None of the events that occurred during Bulger's sixteen years on the run were covered. So, Warner Bros. may be looking to make a sequel. After all, the original film grossed $100 million, and unlike Bulger, Depp is no longer in legal trouble.

5 Bulger was once in the Air Force.

For those who know the real story, Black Mass It seems frustrating because of the way It ignores much of Bulger's background. For example, his service in the U.S. Air Force was never disclosed. After his release from a juvenile correctional facility, he joined the Army, where he earned a high school diploma. However, he never returned to military service.

According to the book The Bolger Brothers By Howie Carr, He spent various periods in military prison for several assaults. He was arrested by the Air Force Police in 1950 for being absent without permission. He was eventually honorably discharged in 1952.

…and he is not the only one who took the military-popular path.

With this revelation, it is easy to understand why Bulger was such a tough, stubborn man. He was tough already, and the military only hardened him. Instead of training him to be useful to his country, Kansas’ Smoky Hill Air Force Base made him a thorn in his side.

Interestingly, Many of the other gangsters were veterans.Among them were John Gotti's vice president, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, Albert Anastasia, and Henry Hill (from Good guys), and Charles “Lucky” Luciano. It might be said that the military is the perfect breeding ground for criminals, but that percentage is small. Many veterans end up becoming good citizens.

4 Lindsay Cyr wasn't the only woman the trumpeter was dating.

Black MassBriefly touches on Bulger's relationship with Lindsay Cyr.The two lived together and had a son (Douglas), who later died of Reye's syndrome, forcing Lindsay to take him off life support, despite Bulger's angry objections. Lindsay blamed herself for Douglas's death as his condition worsened after she gave him an extra dose of aspirin.

The film ignores two other important women in Bulger's life. There were Teresa Stanley and Catherine Craig (Whose mistake led to the gang's capture.) Interestingly, he killed two of Catherine's in-laws, yet she stayed with him. At first, he took Theresa with him on the run, but she got fed up, so he left her and took Catherine.

The romantic arc in the movie is boring.

because Organized crime is a male-dominated field. There aren’t usually major stories about women, but directors like Martin Scorsese and Barry Levinson have shown us that with great writing, female characters can easily be the shining jewels of a gangster movie. Think of Sharon Stone’s fiery, radiant turn as Ginger in casino. Lorraine Bracco is also great in Good guysShe plays the gun-toting, provocative, unrepentant wife of a gangster who wakes her husband up with a gun pointed at his face.

Had Teresa Stanley and Catherine Craig been included, audiences would have enjoyed more exciting romantic stories. While Dakota Johnson was great as Lindsay Cyr, The character is so sad and self-pitying that it is impossible to care about him. It doesn't last long.

3 Bulger's Controversial Lottery Win

One quick scene in the film shows a newspaper clipping revealing that Bulger and his partner won about $14 million in the lottery. Well, there's more to the story than the Winter Hill Gang leader being a lucky gambler. He's definitely not Arnold Rothstein.

In the summer of 1991, James J. “Whitey” Bulger, a South Boston man named Michael Linsky, bought a winning lottery ticket at Bulger's South Boston liquor store, He told state lottery officials he was an accomplice to the gang.so he was entitled to half the grand prize. This was not true and Salon magazine revealed that Bulger forced him to do it.

Get money by all means possible

The extortion of a lottery winner sounds like Bulger. It would not be surprising to discover that Mr. Linsky donated the entire sum. Gangsters are known to use all sorts of illegal methods to get money, and given how feared Bulger was in Boston, it is not surprising that something like this would happen.

It would have been better to see all of this happen on film, as Depp's Bulger is without a doubt one of the scariest characters in film. Seeing Lynskey terrified when he receives an offer he can't refuse would have added to the overall sense of horror and made the film even more memorable.

2 The time a businessman recognized Bulger from a movie scene.

A Black Mass The second part of the film could have been a great movie about a man on the run since the gangster was good at evading the police. The Boston Globe reported that the first confirmed sighting of James “Whitey” Bulger was in London in 2002. That year, Hannibalfollow up to Silence of the Lambs It just came out, and while I was watching it, A businessman noticed Bulger and remembered seeing him just now in a hotel gym..

In one scene in the film, a detective searching for fictional serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter scans a web page displaying the FBI's most wanted list online. As he does so, he quickly passes a photo of Bulger.

stranger than fiction

The fact that a movie about an elusive serial killer almost led to the capture of a real-life criminal who was also elusive was interesting. Bulger and Hannibal Lecter may not have much in common, but they sure know how to make the authorities act tough.

The story evokes memories of another Johnny Depp gangster movie. public enemiesJohn Dillinger (Depp) is arrested as he leaves the theater after watching the crime drama set before the Penal Code, Manhattan MelodramaMovies sure have a funny way of ruining the party for criminals.

1 The story of John Bulger's younger brother

Regarding relatives, Black Mass The film focuses largely on Bulger's brother, William “Billy” Bugler, who served as president of the Massachusetts Senate. The politician, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is quite interesting, but the film completely neglects another Bulger brother.

The criminal had another brother, John B. Bulger, whom he idolized. In 2003, John was sentenced to six months in prison for thwarting police attempts to arrest his white girlfriend. John pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury and two counts of obstruction of justice.

family loyalty

According to South Coast Today, John cited “family loyalty in justifying his actions.” Given the importance that organized crime places on loyalty, John is a character who would have fit in perfectly with Black MassJohn may not have been a criminal, but he understood that family comes first. Watching a criminal sibling exist for over two hours may not seem impressive, but in the skilled hands of Scott Cooper and the screenwriters, John's story could have been magical.
