Blondshell Officially Releases Cathartic, Heavy Rocker ‘What’s Fair’

“I think any mother-daughter relationship is inherently complex,” says Sabrina Teitelbaum.

Blondshell, also known as Sabrina Teitelbaum, is back with the amazing rock song “What's Fair.”

Teitelbaum has been performing the new song at festivals this summer, but she officially dropped it on Wednesday, paired with a cryptic video of her and her band in the studio. The song sonically harks back to ’90s alt-rock and Southern California pop punk, with a sunny melody that belies darker lyrics that explore the trauma of mother-daughter relationships: “I grew up fast without you/I got my eyelashes done in the shower/And some things you want to skip/16 sucking dick in the shower.”

“I think any mother-daughter relationship is inherently complicated,” Teitelbaum said in a statement. “Maybe it’s because my own relationship was built on a lot of trauma and loss, but I think it’s always confusing. What are you allowed to expect, what’s normal, what’s acceptable or unacceptable behavior from a parent, etc.? And how much does “normal” matter when your experience is all you have? I was just trying to sift through the past when I wrote this song, and I mostly had a lot of questions.”

“What's Fair” follows “Docket,” the excellent collaboration between Blondshell and Bully (the duo later released a video) that reached Rolling StoneThe best songs of 2024 so far. Teitelbaum has been touring extensively since releasing her eponymous debut album last year (check out the photos she shared with us from the road).

At Lollapalooza, Teitelbaum spoke to Rolling Stone About her new album, she said: “I feel like I’m more mature now. I know who I am now more than I did two years ago. I’m a mature woman and I’m writing an album.”
