Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Summary

  • Some Bluey episodes were edited or banned for controversial content, like toilet humor or inappropriate phrases.
  • Censorship has relaxed over the years, with initially skipped episodes later released due to fan feedback.
  • Even scenes like a character farting or a pony defecating caused issues, resulting in edits for certain releases.

Bluey has taken the world by storm, but the show can be a little different depending on when and where viewers watch the show. A few episodes feature content that proved to be a bit controversial overseas. Sometimes, a little toilet humor had to be edited out or a character’s line contained something controversial and had to be redubbed. There are also times when scenes even had to be reanimated to accommodate this.

In fact, some episodes have been outright banned entirely due to their content. There have also been a few times when the edited version of the episode saw home releases. However, it’s been noted that the censorship of the series has been relaxed over the years, with once-skipped episodes eventually getting put into circulation. Of course, thanks to YouTube, fans from all around the world have occasionally been able to see the different versions of the show’s episodes.

15 “Family Meeting”

Season 3, Episode 23

“Family Meeting” starts with the Heelers arguing if Bandit just farted, which they refer to as having “fluffied” in Bluey’s face. Chilli decides to arrange a family court of sorts so that everyone can share their side of the story. Bluey uses toys and dolls to act out her story, using a toy skunk to play her father. Bandit continues to deny that he “fluffied” on someone, saying it’s something he would never do, but the others point out he’s done it before.

“‘Cause You’re the King of Fluffies!”

In the end, it turns out that both Bandit and Bluey are a little guilty of wrongdoing. In fact, even Chilli isn’t above having “fluffied,” either. However, the story’s use of toilet humor sparked controversy, with the episode being skipped in countries where Disney distributes the series, in addition to initially keeping it off of Disney+. However, when fans pointed out that a few other episodes featured characters farting were left uncensored, Disney eventually released it.

14 “Fruitbat”

Season 1, Episode 8

Bedtime proves to be a bit of a challenge in “Fruitbat,” with Bluey and Bingo not wanting to go to bed, especially when they learn that fruitbats are nocturnal. Bandit tries to get the girls ready through various “games.” Bingo is tired out, but Bluey can’t fall asleep. Seeing her father asleep on the floor, she learns to appreciate all he does to take care of his girls.

There Was Concern Over the Penguins Game

Bandit comes up with a variety of games that let the girls have fun while finishing up their nighttime routine. To get Bluey to take a shower, he convinces her to slide on the floor like a penguin. However, the scene had to be edited out when the episode aired on CBeebies in the U.K., due to concerns children would get hurt if they tried to imitate it.

13 “Markets”

Season 1, Episode 20

“Markets” sees Bluey get five bucks from the Tooth Fairy, which she plans on spending during a trip to the markets with her father and sister. When she meets up with her friend Indy, she decides she should buy something the both of them could enjoy. However, this is easier said than done, since they can’t enjoy the same things. For starters, Indy can’t eat a lot of the food Bluey suggests buying.

Don’t Stand Behind Buttermilk

At the markets, the girls see a pair of ponies dressed like a unicorn and Pegasus. This is something they would both enjoy, but Bluey only has enough money for one of them. Bluey decides not to go for a ride, but she still pets Buttermilk the “unicorn” and tells her that she’s beautiful. The apathetic pony responds by defecating in front of the girls. This scene was cut in early Disney releases but has popped up in later releases.

This also became an issue when the pony and her handler appeared in “Pass the Parcel,” in which Buttermilk is already seen next to a pile of feces, which was edited out in a Disney release.

12 “Teasing”

Season 1, Episode 48

As the name suggests, “Teasing” sees the Heelers have a discussion about teasing each other and what’s the difference between that and just playing. This ranges from things like Bluey holding her sister’s toothbrush out of reach to Bandit blaming his farts on the kids. In the end, Bandit deduces that there is a difference between teasing and playing, but Bingo plays a “Volume Knob” game and mutes him before he can reveal just what that is.

“Flat Pack” Was Edited for Similar Reasons

However, the episode became controversial through the use of the word, “ooga booga,” as it is seen as having racist connotations concerning Indigenous Australians. For a time, the episode was pulled from ABC in Australia. Some versions of the episodes, such as a version released by Disney, replaced the line with “Shooby-Doowah.” A similar issue also happened with the episode, “Flat Pack,” which also used the controversial phrase. Likewise, this episode also got pulled from airings, with some versions redubbing the line as “Ooh Ooh.”

11 “Daddy Putdown”

Season 1, Episode 51

“Daddy Putdown” starts out with Chilli attending a baby shower, meaning putting Bluey and Bingo to bed will be Bandit’s sole responsibility. Unfortunately, Bluey is too anxious to fall asleep without her mother, even wanting Bandit to ask her to come home. Ultimately, she fears that she won’t feel it when her mother kisses her goodnight when she gets home, as she’ll be asleep. However, it’s eventually shown that she does.

“How Does the Baby Get In the Lady’s Belly?

One line of dialogue in the episode would prove controversial. While playing with the girls, Bandit pretends to think a baby shower involves a literal shower, only for his daughters to correct him. With babies on the brain, Bingo asks her father just how babies get into their mothers’ bellies. Bandit makes an awkward face and starts spinning Bingo on a swing to avoid giving an answer. Disney+ saw the line cut, presumably to avoid children repeating the question to their parents.

10 “Trains”

Season 2, Episode 15

“Trains” is the name of the latest game in the Heeler household, in which Bandit pushes a chair around as a pretend “train.” Bingo uses the imaginary locomotive to drop off her doll at Chilli’s “daycare” and goes off to her “job,” where she pretends to be a vet. Meanwhile, Bluey plays the role of a disruptive passenger and breaks all the train’s rules.

Bluey’s Ticket Wasn’t Originally a Slug

At one point, Bluey is asked to “show” her imaginary ticket to Bandit. Befitting her naughty character, she tells her father to lick and rub it, only to claim, “This isn’t a train ticket; it’s a piece of poo!” Disney’s release edited the line so that Bluey tells her father the “ticket” was a slug. Due to this, Bandit saying, “I licked poo!” had to be cut, with the scene reanimated.

9 “Perfect”

Season 3, Episode 1

It’s Father’s Day in “Perfect” and Bluey wants to give Bandit the perfect card for the holiday. However, she never seems to be satisfied with what she creates, feeling she needs to make something “perfect.” It eventually comes to light that Chilli accidentally hurt her daughter’s confidence when she put a “perfect” drawing Bingo drew over one Bluey made on the fridge, only realizing too late that Bluey was watching.

“I Even Got To Keep Them.”

During a flashback, Bandit is seen talking to one of his friends about a possible medical procedure, which is heavily implied to be a vasectomy, saying that Chilli wants to keep her “options open.” An edited version from Disney, however, cuts the ambiguity by revealing that Bandit is talking about getting his “dog teeth” removed, pointing out they could come in handy if he wants to bite someone. Of course, this takes advantage of the fact the series takes place in a world of anthropomorphic dogs. Notably, the animation is edited to match up with the new dialogue.

8 “Exercise”

Season 3, Episode 39

“Exercise” sees Bandit try to get more physically active, but Bingo and Bluey start using his equipment for their pretend games. Gradually, however, they convince him just to play with them, like using Bandit’s yoga mat to wrap up Bingo like a sushi roll. All these games eventually pay off, however, when Bandit goes to the doctor and is told his blood pressure is good.

The Opening Ended Up Getting Cut

The story’s opening scene features Bandit weighing himself, saying “Oh, man!” when he sees the results. This gets the girls to tell him to exercise in order to lose weight. Chilli also weighs herself and is similarly dissatisfied. Some airings, including international releases, cut the scene, out of concern that the scene promoted having a negative body image. Cutting the scene also reduced the “runtime” of the episode to around six minutes.

7 “Taxi”

Season 1, Episode 25

The Heelers deal with a rainy day in “Taxi” by playing the namesake game. Bluey plays the driver and needs to get Bandit to the airport in time for a flight to Tasmania. Bandit doesn’t want her to get lost or pick up others, but she ends up picking up Bingo, who is playing a rich woman. This is just the start of various delays concocted by Chilli and Bingo. Eventually, he decides to get to the airport on foot. He makes it, only to learn Bingo is another passenger and Bluey is the pilot.

“Oh, Biscuits!”

Bingo’s character has a daughter, Millicent, who she represents with a doll. Throughout the story, Bingo makes Millicent “vomit” into Bandit’s lap, making the trip all the more unbearable, even if it is just a pretend game. The vomiting scenes were toned down in the U.S. release, however, with the episode instead ending with Bandit saying “Oh, biscuits!”

6 “Born Yesterday”

Season 3, Episode 6

In “Born Yesterday,” when Bluey and Bingo ask why they have to listen to adults, Chilli explains it’s because adults have been alive longer and have more world experience. This inspires a new game for Bandit: “Born Yesterday,” with Bandit pretending to be alive for his second day on Earth. As the girls try to teach him about the world, Bandit goes out of control, wanting to experience multiple things at once. The two sisters then start to see their mother’s perspective but allow Bandit to go off on his own to experience the world.

Watch Out for That Swing

One scene that proved controversial was one where Bandit “discovers” a swing and gives Bingo a push. When he’s not looking, however, the swing hits him, likely in the groin. Initially, the brief scene was cut in Disney’s distribution of the episode, though it has appeared in later releases.

5 “Army”

Season 2, Episode 16

“Army” is known for being one of Bluey‘s more emotional episodes. The story debuts Jack, a new student at Bluey’s school, who befriends Rusty and joins him for his “army” game. Jack worries he’s too forgetful and that he’s not good at following instructions, but Rusty assures him that he’s good at playing “army,” which requires the things Jack thinks he’s not good at.

Jack’s Self-Deprecation Was Slightly Toned Down

When Rusty asks Jack why he changed schools, he speculates there must have been something wrong with his old school. Jack confides that, “There’s something wrong with me,” listing the things he has trouble with. In the Disney-distributed versions of the episode, the line had been edited to “There’s something going on with me,” presumably downplaying the idea that something could be “wrong” about a child.

4 “Mr Monkeyjocks”

Season 2, Episode 38

In “Mr Monkeyjocks,” Bandit and Chilli decide the girls have too many toys cluttering up the playroom and decide to donate the ones the girls don’t think are special. However, Bluey and Bingo believe all of their toys are special. Bandit challenges the girls to prove Mr. Monkeyjocks, a stuffed monkey, is still special to them. They go along with this, effectively having the toy surpass Bandit’s place in the household. However, Bandit turns the tables on the girls, posing as Mr. Monkeyjocks’ butler, and manipulates the girls into waiting on him hand and foot.

One Overly-Romantic Line Had to Be Changed

A few lines of dialogue were toned down in the Disney release. At one point, Bandit says, “He’s gone crazy,” which is toned down to “He’s gone bananas!” Likewise, Chilli once refers to Mr Monkeyjocks as “lover boy,” which is downplayed to the more platonic “sweetheart.”

3 “Driving”

Season 3, Episode 20

“Driving” sees Bluey wanting to play a driving game with her mother, but Chilli is too busy getting dinner ready. However, she agrees to take a brief break to play with her. During their time together, Chilli convinces Bluey the game would do better if she had a certain goal in mind when she plays.

Sometimes a Cat Uses Her Claws

As part of her game, Bluey has to get almond milk for a cat toy, “Agatha,” who she treats as a tea party guest. However, Agatha threatens to urinate on the curtains if Bluey fails to make it in time. In some releases, such as the version distributed by Disney, the threat is that Agatha will scratch up the curtains instead, toning down the toilet humor.

2 “Smoochy Kiss”

Season 3, Episode 35

“Smoochy Kiss” has Chlli dealing with a few of Bandit’s bad habits, which causes their daughters to feel that their mother doesn’t deserve a kiss from their father. They decide to keep Bandit away from Chilli. However, after spending some time alone with him, they see his habits firsthand and realize their mother had a few points.

“You Gotta Take the Good With the Bad”

One of Bandit’s bad habits is his farting, though it is not really featured onscreen. Similar to “Family Meeting,” the farts are referred to as “fluffies.” Likewise, as with the earlier episode, the episode was withheld from the Disney Channel and the Disney+ service. Eventually, however, this was reversed, with the episode actually being the first from the third season’s second half to be available in the United States. Notably, the episode has sometimes been paired with “Family Meeting.”

1 “Dad Baby”

Season 2, Episode 13

In “Dad Baby,” Bingo finds her old baby carrier. This inspires a new game, which sees Bandit wear the device and pretend to be pregnant with Bingo. Bandit initially thinks the game will be easy, but he’s soon proven wrong. Bandit wants to back out, but Bluey pressures him to keep going, reminding him that he told her to always do something properly when doing something. Eventually, Bandit gives “birth” to Baby Bingo, even roping Lucky’s dad to help with the delivery.

It Eventually Popped Up On YouTube

Looking into “newborn” Bingo’s eyes apparently makes it all worth it. The episode was skipped, however, in the United States, either because the subject of giving birth or male pregnancy was considered inappropriate. Eventually, the episode was made available for streaming through the official Bluey YouTube channel, though not on Disney+.
