Bon Iver Releases ‘Speyside’ Off ‘Sable’ EP

Track features on Sablethe first new music from Justin Vernon's folk group, which has been in the works for about five years.

You can see In one scene in the black-and-white video, directed by Erin Springer, we see Justin Vernon crying and screaming, “Nothing happened the way I expected,” and in another, Vernon wades into the ocean in a coat and hat. Justin sings as his guitar flashes and violins blare behind him. In almost every song, every note, Vernon’s loneliness is overwhelming.

The song, an apology he wrote in 2021 to loved ones he's hurt, is one of three new tracks that will make up Sablean EP set to be released on October 18. It will be Bon Iver's first release in about five years.

Vernon performed the song two years ago at a concert in London. He said at the time: “When I wrote this song, I was feeling a huge amount of guilt, which is an important feeling to feel. It’s also an important feeling to ignore. The day I wrote this song, I got a little drunk on rum and sent it to two friends who are here tonight. I’m grateful to have a friend I can send it to. You can’t post this song on MySpace anymore!”

Vernon recorded the songs between 2020 and 2023 at April Base in Wisconsin. He produced them with Jim E. Stack. Rob Moss played viola.

Bon Iver's last releases, the singles “AUATC” and “PDLIF,” were released in 2020. That same year, he duetted with Taylor Swift on “Exile,” a track from her album The Last of Us. Folklore Album.
