Bill Skarsgård shows off his beast mode in the new trailer for Boy Kills World. Director Moritz Mohr’s film stars Skarsgård as the titular character whose family is massacred. And while the “Boy” is left alive, his hearing and voice are cruelly ripped away from him, leaving Skarsgård’s character deaf and mute. Watch Skarsgård’s Boy getting his vengeance on in the new red band trailer above, and check out the wild synopsis and new images below:
“Skarsgård stars as ‘Boy’ who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents.
Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.”
Mohr’s movie appeared as a part of the Midnight Madness series at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) when it premiered on September 9 of 2023. It’s an honor to be a part of TIFF, but what really floored Mohr was how the legendary Sam Raimi became a producer on the project. Raimi had seen a concept trailer for Boy Kills World, and Mohr discussed waiting to hear his reaction in an exclusive interview with Empire magazine:
“It was complete insanity. I was showing my phone to everyone around me, ‘You see that?!’ Two hours later, we were all hanging out at a Five Guys in LA. The email arrived, and it just said, ‘Sam flipped.’ It became our battle cry for the next few weeks. Meeting him and getting to work with him was just the absolute dream come true. It was ridiculous, man.”

Bill Skarsgård portrays the Boy in director Moritz Mohr’s action flick Boy Kills World, and the actor is ably flanked by a number of stellar performers. In addition to Ruhian playing the Boy’s mentor, Michelle Dockery takes on the sinister Melanie Van Der Koy who wields a machine gun in the trailer (below). And it appears that Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen) is the one who violently robs the Boy of his hearing and sight!
While Boy Kills World doesn’t officially drop until April, a dozen critics have already had the opportunity to review the TIFF selection. And, at the time of this writing, Mohr’s movie registers a 75% rating on the Tomatometer. Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro writes:
“It takes a while to smooth out its roughest edges. By the end, it’ll leave you clamoring to join Boy for a match of Super Dragon Punch Force II over a bowl of the sugariest breakfast cereal. And that sums up exactly what type of brawler this is.”
Film Threat’s Alan Ng says:
In the end, Boy Kills World is a two-hour roller coaster. You’ll leave exhausted and beaten, yet feeling like maybe you too can defeat the fascist dictators in your life.
Erik Childress of the Movie Madness podcast adds:
“These kind of hyperactive martial arts films and their specialty FX are becoming commonplace, but this one manages some oddball humor from a fun cast and fight sequences that come closer to those in The Raid rather than just another computer screen.”
Actors Brett Gelman and Sharlto Copley portray two more of the villainous Van Der Koy clan, while Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day, La La Land, Mary + Jane) joins the cast as the character June 27. You can check out some cool character posters below:
