The Emmy Awards have officially announced the nominees for the drama, comedy and limited series categories, and they've revealed some exciting surprises that many viewers — and even industry professionals — may not have seen coming.

Matty Matheson, best known for his breakout role as Fack in the groundbreaking comedy series The Bear, was not nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy. However, he did earn his first Emmy nomination as a producer on the hit series, which could bring him his first win.

He may not be a household name, but producer Garrett Bash, who earned his first nomination for “The Night of” in 2017, made history as the first producer to have three scripted shows nominated in the same year. He earned nominations for the Netflix limited series “Ripley” and the FX comedies “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” Bash’s FX colleague Taika Waititi also made history as the first original producer to earn double comedy nominations for “Dogs” and “Shadows.”

DB Weiss and David Benioff, best known as the minds behind “Game of Thrones,” have earned their second nomination for a drama series for Netflix’s sci-fi adaptation of “3 Body Problem.” Among the 21 other producers nominated for the series is “Knives Out” director Rian Johnson, who received his first nod after previously being snubbed for his directing work on “Breaking Bad” and “Poker Face.” The “3 Body Problem” production team also includes actress Rosamund Pike as an executive producer, along with Plan B heads Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.

As I mentioned before diverseSelena Gomez is the most-nominated Latina producer in Emmy history, earning her third consecutive nomination for the Hulu mystery comedy “Only Murders in the Building.” Additionally, she earned her first nomination as lead comedy actress. Gomez is joined by co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, among several actor/producers who received double nominations. Other stars include Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shogun”), Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”), Donald Glover (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”), Matt Bomer (“Travel Buddies”), Richard Gad (“Reindeer Baby”), Brie Larson (“Chemistry Lessons”), Paul W. Downs (“Hax”) and Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”).

Other notable names among the nominees include veteran executive producers Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and the late Steve Golin, who are part of the 18-nominated team for “True Detective: Night Country,” along with Oscar winners Barry Jenkins and Cary Joji Fukunaga. Emmy winners Jason Bateman and Laura Dern are also nominated as part of the teams for “Lessons in Chemistry” and “Palm Royale.”

Final voting for the Emmy Awards runs from August 15-26.
