American tennis star Taylor Fritz came close to winning the US Open this week, losing to Jannik Sinner in three sets. But in addition to making history as the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since 2009, Fritz also made a splash with his choice of footwear.
After years of wearing Nike tennis shoes, Fritz showed up to the US Open wearing a pair of ASICS shoes.
Taylor Fritz Certified
ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 Men's Shoe
Fritz played the Grand Slam in a pair of black and white ASICS Gel-Resolution 9 tennis shoes. Designed for all surfaces (from hard courts to grass and clay), these sneakers feature the brand’s “DYNAWALL” and “DYNAWRAP” technologies, which promise to support your feet for better movement and stability. ASICS says these shoes give you “a stable feel when making quick transitions.”
The shoes are also designed with comfort in mind, especially if you’re going to be playing long five-set matches, like Fritz did against fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semifinals. ASICS has always made comfortable shoes (the GEL-2160 is our favorite sneaker these days) but the GEL-RESOLUTION 9 also features a soft, flexible, breathable and lightweight knit upper – no sweaty shoes here. The tennis shoes are also designed to be durable for the long haul, especially in the toe and heel area, which often take the brunt of impact as you run around the court.
Fritz officially signed with ASICS as its newest global ambassador in August, just before the US Open. In a press release, the footwear brand said it was thrilled to welcome the tennis star — and recent Olympic bronze medalist — into the family.
“ASICS is proud to partner with such a talented athlete who has won one of a remarkable nine-tournament series,” said Mitsuyuki Tominaga, ASICS President and Chief Operating Officer. “I am very impressed by his attitude toward tennis, especially his relentless pursuit of every point, never giving up until the end. As his playing skills are so important to his game, we are committed to supporting him from the feet throughout his future career, helping him achieve even more progress as we continue to lift each other up.”
“I’m so excited about this new partnership,” Fritz adds. “I’ve seen so many elite players use ASICS shoes on tour over the years, so I know I’m in good hands. By chance, I tried the shoes on during a photo shoot and then in training the same afternoon, and I immediately felt more comfortable than I had in years. The comfort, support, speed—it’s all on another level. I’m so proud to represent a brand with such a rich history in sports and footwear, and one that cares so deeply about health and wellness.”
As mentioned earlier, Fritz wore Nike tennis shoes before leaving the sports giant for ASICS. Nike, for its part, still works with athletes like Naomi Osaka and Carlos Alcaraz.
Fritz is also sponsored by Hugo Boss. Boss has dressed Fritz on and off the court, including at all tournaments, official events, red carpet moments and interviews. You can buy the Boss Tennis collection online here.
