Finneas, Lizzo, Ariana Grande, and More Also Join in on the President's Shocking Decision (and Support Kamala Harris) on Sunday
The world of music, Like the rest of the United States, I was shocked to learn of President Joe Biden's decision not to run for re-election on Sunday, with many artists taking to social media immediately afterward to thank Biden for his service and decision, or to throw their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
Cher was among those puzzled by Biden’s decision, saying she “loved” Joe while also realizing he was unlikely to defeat Donald Trump on Election Day. “In my heart I feel tortured because I don’t believe Democrats can win the presidency with ‘President Biden’ the ‘Joe’ I have loved since we met in 2008,” Cher wrote. “I campaigned for him and I think it’s time to pass the baton, and time for Democrats to think ‘outside the box.’ Maybe even a split ticket.”
Barbra Streisand thanked Biden for what he accomplished while in office, saying: “Joe Biden will go down in history as a man who accomplished great things during his four years in office. We should be grateful for his commitment to our democracy.”
On Instagram, Ariana Grande retweeted Biden's post endorsing Harris as his replacement in the upcoming presidential election:
Cardi B also showed her direct support for Harris, as did Lil Nas X:
Finneas also took to Instagram after the Biden news, posting a photo of himself, his sister Billie Eilish and his family with Biden in the Oval Office. “I see someone who puts people before themselves and their pride today, and for that, I have an enormous amount of respect,” the singer wrote.
Finally, Lizzo summed up our nation's collective chaos on Instagram:
