Chris Evans ‘Couldn’t Pass Up’ Joining ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” now in theaters..

After briefly appearing in the 2021 comedy “Free Guy,” Chris Evans told People magazine that he jumped at the chance to reunite with director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds for a short role in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

“It was two years ago and I got a text from Ryan, we’re friends,” Evans said. “He just said, ‘Listen, if you don’t like this idea, don’t worry about it at all. But I have something that could really turn the tables and allow you to play a character from your past.’”

In the latest Marvel film, Evans reprises his role as Johnny Storm, also known as The Human Torch, which Evans played in 2005's “Fantastic Four” and 2007's “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

“I mean, honestly, I’ll do anything Ryan asks me to do,” Evans added. “He already gave me a great role in Free Guy, and I trust him completely. So the opportunity to be Johnny again, I couldn’t pass it up. I loved it. It was fun to film it and watch it, all of that.”

Evans' performance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” includes a monologue at the end of the film that includes some harsh language and adult humor. To help Evans get through the scene, Reynolds offered to provide the Marvel Cinematic Universe veteran with cue cards.

“Ryan said, ‘Listen, if we need cue cards…’ and I said, ‘Cue cards? I’ll show up off-book,’” Evans said. “I don’t get to say dialogue like that. Trust me. I’m going to enjoy every second of this. I know it by heart.”
