Christopher Abbott Becomes a Monster

Ooooh! Universal and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for “Wolf Man,” starring Christopher Abbott as the classic horror monster.

Abbott co-stars in the film alongside Julia Garner. The film marks an on-screen reunion for the actors, who first worked together in 2011's “Martha, Marcy, May, Marilyn,” Garner's first professional acting role.

This isn't Abbott's first foray into the horror genre, having starred in 2017's It Comes at Night. Abbott also starred in the Oscar-nominated Poor Things and 2019's Catch-22. Garner earned critical acclaim for her three-time Emmy-winning performance as Ruth Langmore in Ozark. She's also been tipped for a role in 2022's Inventing Anna, where she earned an Emmy nomination for her role as Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes' limited series.

Wolf Man is directed by Leigh Whannell, the co-creator of the “Saw” franchise who also helmed the 2020 horror hit “The Invisible Man,” which grossed $144 million at the worldwide box office. It is also the director’s fourth film for Blumhouse, following “The Invisible Man,” “Upgrade,” and “Insidious: Chapter 3.” Whannell is co-writing the screenplay alongside Corbett Tuck, Lauren Shuker Bloom, and Rebecca Angelo. Jason Blum is producing the film, which is being produced by Blumhouse and Motel Movies, while Ryan Gosling (who was initially set to star), Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner, and Whannell serve as executive producers.

Years ago, Universal intended to create an interconnected Dark Universe to remake previous monster movies set in a shared universe. However, plans were shelved after the critical and commercial failure of 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise. Talk of a universe began to revive online after the critical and commercial success of The Invisible Man. Universal has since released two Dracula-inspired films, Renfield starring Nicolas Cage and The Last Voyage of Demeter, both of which received mixed reviews and were considered box office bombs.

The film is scheduled to be released on January 17. Watch the trailer below.
