Christopher Lloyd Reveals Why He Loved Playing Fester Addams


Christopher Lloyd Discover the joy of embodying your favorite childhood character when he stars as Barry Sonnenfeld. The Addams FamilyLloyd tells Variety that as a child he enjoyed reading Charles Addams novels. The Addams Family Lloyd was interested in characters like Fester Adams, whom he described as mischievous but not malicious. Years later, the opportunity to portray this quirky, kind, and loving character proved to be an exciting one for Lloyd.



“I loved it.

“It was about the mischief that Uncle Fester was showing, not the evil. He could just play a little bit. Then that period of my life came around and decades later, I got a phone call saying, ‘Would you like to be Uncle Fester in a movie? What are the odds?’ It was so exciting to be able to play the character that I loved as a kid.”

Lloyd first portrayed Pfister in 1991. The Addams FamilyThe family film stars a talented cast including Lloyd, Raul Julia as Gomez, Anjelica Huston as Morticia, Christina Ricci as Wednesday, Jamie Workman as Pugsley, Judith Malina as Grandma, and Karel Stroken as Lurch.


But portraying Fester was a bit tricky at first, as Lloyd didn't look like Fester at all. In a 2013 interview, Lloyd described how the crew used prosthetics on his face to give him “that rounded look.” Still, something wasn't right, so when Sonnenfeld and screenwriter Paul Rudnick asked Lloyd to join them at Paramount, Lloyd thought he might be replaced.

“I remember arriving at their offices and there was a man who, without doing anything for himself, looked
exactly
Like Uncle Fester. He was stocky, he was bald, he just had the looks. And I thought, ”
Oh my god, he's the man they decided to marry. [to replace me with]”.”

After watching a scene together, Rudnick and Sonnenfeld told Lloyd that the prosthetics weren't working, as they limited his facial expressions, and that they would instead use makeup to achieve the desired effect. Lloyd felt “very, very relieved.”

Lloyd would portray Fester Adams again in 1993. Addams Family Valueswhich saw Joan Cusack join the cast as Fester's love interest. Paramount Home Entertainment will release a 4K UHD version of the film on October 29, just in time for Halloween. The release will also include access to a digital copy of the film and new bonus content, including commentary from Sonnenfeld and Rudnick and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film.

While that was the last time audiences saw Lloyd as Fester, we will see the actor return to the Addams Family in WednesdayThe second season of 's is expected. Details surrounding Lloyd's character (Fred Armisen plays Fester in the series) have not been revealed. His role in the Tim Burton series makes him the second highest-rated actor in the series. Lloyd is currently nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award—his first nomination in 32 years—for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Larry Arbuckle in Breakthroughs“Deborah Vance's Wonderful Christmas Show.” Lloyd previously won two Emmys for her portrayal of another unusual character, Taxi. Jim Ignatowskiand his third Emmy Award for his guest appearance on The Road to Avonlea.
