We talked to Robert Mark Kamen, the writer of the original Karate Kid who based that movie entirely on his karate teacher in Okinawa; we talked to him about all this background around Miyagi, which helped us set things up for Season 6.

“We think about spinoffs of Cobra Kai all the time. Cobra Kai itself, in a way, is a spinoff of The Karate Kid. We took the bully character from The Karate Kid, and we took that branch and made it our own tree, and we feel like we could do that with any of the characters in the show. We definitely thought about that as we connected all the characters. We think about the fun of following them in their future, and in addition, we think about the past.”
