Colin Farrell recently said, Total Film Magazine He's unsure about returning as Oswald Cobblepot for a potential second season of “The Penguin” given the emotional and physical toll it would take to transform into the infamous Batman villain. Farrell made his first appearance as the gangster in 2022's “The Batman.” The first season of “The Penguin” premieres this month on HBO and Max.
“I don’t know, man,” Farrell said. “Don’t get me wrong — I loved it — but it affected me a little bit. By the end of the movie, I was whining and complaining to anyone who would listen that I wanted the movie to end. I tried to remind them that ‘I feel so grateful.’ I’m still grateful, I still feel honored — I grew up watching Burgess Meredith.” [who played the role in the ’60s TV series]then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton’s 1992 film ‘Batman Returns’] It was my way – so to be part of that storytelling series, I felt really lucky. But by the end of it…”
“It's not like I didn't know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and stuff, but… if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren did [LeFranc, showrunner] What did Mike do? [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] “I put all of this stuff together, and it was a really powerful experience,” he continued. “Lauren said, ‘Look, if you can find a way that makes sense, will you talk about it?’ And I said, ‘Sure.’ And maybe in a year I will. But when I was done, I said, ‘I never want to wear that fucking suit and that fucking head again.’”
Farrell will have to don the Penguin suit again for “Batman 2,” which begins production next year and hits theaters on October 2, 2026. The film’s director, Matt Reeves, recently confirmed that Farrell’s Penguin will be in the sequel and that the “Penguin” franchise leads directly into the story of the film he’s telling.
Colin [Farrell] “It’s going to be part of the movie,” Reeves said of the Penguin’s return. “We’ve been involved [the script] “We’re also working with DC and the studio and they’re very excited. There are details that directly tie into the way the next movie starts, the way Oz enters this world as we pass the baton back to Batman, and Batman takes on another case.”
But there's a big difference between shooting a movie and shooting a TV season of several episodes. So Farrell may be more inclined to appear in “Batman 2” than in the second season of “Penguin.” The first season of “Penguin” begins on September 19.
