Daisy Ridley Reveals Graves’ Disease Diagnosis

Daisy Ridley revealed in a recent article in Women's Health that she was diagnosed with Graves' disease in September 2023.

Graves' disease is an immune system disorder that causes the thyroid gland to overproduce hormones. Common symptoms include shivering, sensitivity to heat, weight loss, and skin irritation.

After filming Sam Yates' 2024 thriller “Magpie,” Ridley began experiencing symptoms of increased heart rate, rapid weight loss, fatigue and hand tremors. “I thought, 'Well, I've just played a really stressful role, and maybe that's why I'm feeling so bad,'” Ridley said.

After describing her condition to an endocrinologist, they said Graves' feelings were typically described as “tired but strange.” At that moment, Ridley realized how emotional she was as she went through the early stages of the disease.

“It was funny, I felt like I was upset with the world,” Ridley said. “But it turns out that everything is moving so fast, you can’t relax.”

Ridley, who had been a vegetarian for several years, also stopped eating gluten after her diagnosis. Although she admits she's not “very strict” about it, changing her diet “in general” makes her “feel better.”

The Star Wars star has also added infrared saunas, cryotherapy and acupuncture to her wellness routine to help ease symptoms. She also carries a piece of rose quartz, which is said to calm emotional turmoil, promote inner peace and enhance self-love.

“I do a fair amount of inclusive stuff, but I also understand that it's a pleasure to be able to do those things,” Ridley said.
