Oscar-winning director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything, Man on Wire, Red Riding) spoke with MovieWeb’s Greg Archer about his new film, Dance First, a character study of Nobel Prize-winning writer Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot) and his fascinating, turbulent life. Dance First hits theaters August 9, 2024 and digitally on August 16.
Literary genius Samuel Beckett (played by Gabriel Byrne) lived a life of many sides: a Parisian flamboyant man, a World War II Resistance fighter, a Nobel Prize-winning playwright, a womanizing husband, and a recluse. But for all the adulation he received, he was a man who was acutely aware of his flaws. Titled Dance First, Think Later, after Beckett’s famous motto, “Dance first, think later,” the film is a comprehensive account of the life of this 20th-century icon.
