Daniel Radcliffe Opens Up About Coming Back to Franchises Like Harry Potter

Summary

  • Daniel Radcliffe, known for Harry Potter, prefers to focus on diverse roles to avoid being typecast.
  • He enjoys freedom in choosing projects, but is open to big films like Harry Potter again.
  • Recent roles showcase his talent in various genres, moving beyond just the iconic wizard.

Daniel Radcliffe, the London-born actor who rose to worldwide stardom when he played Harry Potter in the franchise of the same name, has explained why he hasn’t returned to big studio films that could spawn into franchises. Radcliffe, whose debut in 2001 consolidated what would then turn into a decent career, has mostly stuck to more serious roles that have helped him stay away from the typecast of his famous child performance.

Playing cinema’s most important wizard was what put him out there. But Radcliffe didn’t exactly capitalize on the presence the Harry Potter franchise gave him. Instead, he focused on theater, and developed a career in that medium as well, gaining the respect of being a Thespian Broadway figure. After the much-deserved success of the franchise started to fizzle down, Radcliffe continued to make films, just not the juggernauts everyone expected he would make.

In an interview with CBR, where he promotes season two of the animated Netflix series Mulligan, Radcliffe explains:

“I’m not really [avoiding them]…There have been some studio films that just have not been for me, but I’ve not been turning down loads of franchises, either. I don’t want to give that impression.”

He expands on his take on committing to film productions that look good on paper, but demand his whole presence in a concept that runs for several years: “One of the things I love about my career now is that I have a lot of freedom to do lots of different things and if I was going to get stuck into one thing for a very long time again, it would have to be for a very good reason.”

Nevertheless, he isn’t refusing to make bigger films. At one point, Harry Potter was precisely that: a gigantic studio film that turned into an ever-expanding franchise. The English actor has to have good memories of working in one of the biggest franchises of the 21st century, as he also says:

I certainly wouldn’t be averse to doing one again.

Daniel Radcliffe’s Latest Roles Have Included Action, Adventure, Musicals and Animation

While he will also be associated with the Harry Potter franchise, Radcliffe has made his share of noteworthy films that range in different genres and on all sides of the spectrum of studio films. It’s through this diverse career that we’ve seen him take part in roles that prove he’s not “the boy who played Harry Potter” anymore. It could be an indie film or a renowned studio one. Radcliffe has fortunately been able to break free of the restraints of the Harry Potter stereotype by carefully selecting roles that don’t feel like desperate decisions or cash-grabs.
