David Lynch has teased that something big is coming on June 5, 2024, in a cryptic post, but what could it be? Lynch is the iconic creator behind the legendary TV series, Twin Peaks, while also the auteur who directed the likes of Eraserhead, Dune, and Lost Highway. The last incarnation of Twin Peaks ended in 2017 with Twin Peaks: The Return which aired on Showtime, but since then Lynch has been noticeably absent from the world of film and television, so his strange post has raised a lot of eyebrows and speculation.

Lynch’s cryptic message came by way of X (formerly Twitter) on May 27, 2024, when he posted for the first time since December 2022 a video of himself adorned in dark sunglasses. “Ladies and gentleman,” he says, “something is coming along for you to see and hear… and it will be coming along on June 5.” Check out the video below.

David Lynch rose to prominence in the 1980s after the success of his underground cult-classic Eraserhead in 1977. He followed up the surrealist horror film with a more mainstream title, The Elephant Man, before going on to direct the first adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune in 1984. At one point, Lynch was approached by George Lucas to direct Return of the Jedi, but it was a job that Lynch would ultimately turn down.

While his unique style shone through on the big screen, it was television that led to Lynch reaching cult-like status thanks to Twin Peaks in 1990. Though the series only lasted for two seasons in its initial run, its complex blend of mystery, surrealistic imagery, and humor left a lasting impression on those in the industry who would go on to cite the series as a major influence on their own careers.

What Will David Lynch Unleash on June 5, 2024?

While one can only guess at this point, there is a good chance that June 5, 2024, could see Lynch make an announcement regarding his latest project, Snootworld. The animated fairytale has been on Lynch’s mind for the last two decades, and he’s worked with Caroline Thompson on its script. Thompson has been a longtime collaborator with Tim Burton, writing such films as The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Edward Scissorhands.

In a recent conversation with Deadline, Lynch revealed that he and Thompson were still looking for financial backers for the feature film. While he was hoping Netflix would take a chance on the project, the streamer ended up passing on it. Check out his comments below.

“I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge. I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this so I presented it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it.”

In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, David Duchovny talks returning for Twin Peaks: The Return and why the series still holds up so well today.

While word is still out on exactly what a ‘Snoot’ is, and what they resemble, Thompson did share some information regarding their backstory, and what the plot of the animated film could look like.

“The Snoots are these tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected. The world goes into chaos when the Snoot hero of the story disappears into the carpet and his family can’t find him and he enters a crazy, magnificent world.”

Until Lynch and Thompson confirm the project for themselves on June 5, 2024, it’s all just speculation at this point. Only one thing is for certain: with David Lynch involved, you can expect to be taken on an incredibly unique journey.
