Deadpool 3 First Reactions Praise Wolverine, Cameos and Hugh Jackman

Early reactions to “Deadpool & Wolverine” have been overwhelmingly positive. The enthusiasm for the film comes at a much-needed time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which saw rare flops last year with the releases of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” The latest “Deadpool” is the only Disney-backed Marvel movie on the 2024 release calendar and marks the official introduction of the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film press has called the sequel “a lot of fun” and “a step in the right direction for Marvel.”

“Deadpool and Wolverine is a huge shake-up for the Marvel Cinematic Universe because it’s the biggest, boldest, most awesome movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Infinity War and Endgame,” wrote Sean Taghipour of Nerdtropolis. “Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are the perfect pairing we’ve all been waiting for!”

The Direct editor David Thompson called Deadpool & Wolverine the “deadliest” and “funniest” Marvel Cinematic Universe film ever, adding: “Having Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman together as icons is incredible. It’s not perfect, but it’s a thrilling theatrical experience.” [and] A step in the right direction for Marvel.

“Yes, the short scenes and surprises were great, and the humor, action, bloody fights, and needle drops were great too… but it's the respect and love for the characters that draws you in,” wrote Erik Davis of Fandango.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” reunites Ryan Reynolds for his third appearance as the Merc with the Mouth opposite Hugh Jackman in his long-awaited return as the iconic X-Men character following 2017’s “Logan.” That film featured the death of Jackman’s character Wolverine since 2000’s “X-Men.” The ongoing multiverse of the MCU has allowed Jackman to return to play a different version of the mutant. The supporting cast includes Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin and more.

Despite Marvel having to deal with last year’s box office flop, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is already shaping up to be a huge success for the studio. The sequel, the first R-rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was projected to make in the $165 million range in its opening weekend, which would not only be the biggest start of 2024 so far but also the highest start for an R-rated film in history.

Disney's “Deadpool & Wolverine” opens in theaters nationwide on July 26. Check out the early reactions below.
