Lovato joined the Mexican band on stage at the Austin stop of their La Última Peda tour.
On Friday night, Mexican music group Grupo Firme surprised the audience at their Austin concert with an unexpected special guest: Demi Lovato. Yes, you read that right. Lovato appeared on stage with lead singer Edwin Kaz to perform their upcoming single “Chula.”
In the middle of the song, Demi Lovato, who has been working on back-to-back rock projects, joins the group “Ya Supérame” to release their first dance-pop collaboration, which will be released on August 15. The song, which hears Demi Lovato return to her folk roots, also contains some elements of Verme's Mexican music.
Lovato caused quite a stir on social media earlier this week after a fan asked her to sing a new song. She captioned the post, “Say you're ready but I bet you're not.” In response, Fermi's Instagram account wrote “🤠🫶🔥” in the comments, referring to the collaboration.
The new single is a big step for Verme, who was rumored to be splitting up in 2023 after Kaz announced his retirement from music. He reversed that decision earlier this year and reunited the band, which is in the middle of its La Última Peda tour. The band has stops remaining in cities including Las Vegas, San Jose and Los Angeles through early November.
When chatting with rolling stone In 2022, Kaz said the band was open to trying new genres. “If it doesn’t work out, at least we tried,” he said at the time. “I’m going home with a smile on my face because I love challenges.” Kaz has stayed true to his word, joining pop star Thalía on “Te Va Doler” and Mexican reggaetonero singer Danny Flo on “Domberi” earlier this year.
As for Lovato, she joined Slash on a cover of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” after releasing reimaginings of her hit pop songs on Renewed In 2023 and her rock album Oh, my God “Chula” wasn't Lovato's first foray into Spanish-language music. She joined Luis Fonsi on “Échame La Culpa” in 2017.
