Dick Van Dyke Didn’t Win an Emmy This Weekend — Or Break Any Records

Dick Van Dyke is a living legend, and there aren’t enough awards in the world to properly honor the icon of the big and small screens. Unfortunately, despite reports to the contrary over the weekend, the 2024 Primetime Emmys won’t be one of them.

Van Dyke did not personally win an Emmy at this week's Creative Arts Awards, meaning he didn't break any records as the oldest Emmy winner ever. The confusion comes from the fact that a special about Van Dyke — “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic” on CBS — an act He won an Emmy. Photos of the ceremony showed Van Dyke holding a statue. But it wasn't his.

Dick Van Dyke's 98 Years of Magic won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Taped) at this week's Creative Arts Emmy Awards. But here's the technicality: Van Dyke wasn't credited as a producer on the special, so he wasn't eligible to appear as a nominee or winner.

That means reports that Van Dyke broke Norman Lear's record and became the oldest Emmy winner ever at age 98 are inaccurate. The record still stands for Lear, who was 98 (but now a few months younger than Van Dyke) in 2020 when he won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for “Broadcast Live in Front of a Studio Audience.”

The following are the producers who have been honored with the Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic Award: Executive Producers Craig Plestis, Chris Wagner, Clara Plestis, Ashley Edens, Deena Katz, and Arlene Van Dyke; Supervising Producer Stephanie Wagner; Producers Brittany Cherry and Arielle Cubitt; and Producer Chelsea Junnering.

And yes, that means Van Dyke's wife Arlene. an act He won an Emmy as an executive producer. So even if the star doesn't win, a statue will go to his house.

However, the star broke a record earlier this year at the 2024 Daytime Emmys by winning Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series (for Days of Our Lives), making him the biggest winner ever in the competition.
