Dolly Parton Shares Two More Songs From ‘Smoky Mountain DNA’ Project


Dolly Parton has shared two more songs from her upcoming music and visual project. Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith, and SuperstitionShe also revealed the setlist of 37 songs for the collection, which were recorded by Parton and members of her extended family.

First, Parton revealed the album's title track, a new song she wrote herself as “a sweeping theme that celebrates her family's musical roots and heritage,” according to a press release.

Additionally, Parton revived her song “A Rose Won't Fix It”—which she wrote and recorded for the 1988 Hungry Again album but ultimately left off the album—and brought in her niece Heidi Parton as lead vocalist, with Dolly as background vocalist on the song:

For some songs, audio from deceased family members is also incorporated into the music, such as contributions from Parton's late grandfather, Pastor Jake Owens.

“I can’t believe it’s been 60 years this month since I graduated from Sevier County High School and moved to Nashville to pursue my dreams,” Parton shared in a previous statement. “My uncle Bill Owens has been by my side for so many years and helped me develop my music. I owe him so much and all the family members past and present who have inspired me along the way. I am honored to shine a light on our family’s musical legacy that is my Smoky Mountain DNA.”

Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith, and Superstition The album arrives on November 15 and will be accompanied by a four-part documentary series tracing Parton’s musical lineage. The album, available for pre-order now, will also be released on “Appalachian Autumn” colored vinyl in a limited edition of just 3,363 copies, the coordinates of the family’s Tennessee Mountain home in Locust Ridge, Tennessee (36°N, 83°W).
