Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Break Down the Mr. and Mrs. Smith Finale

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Prime Video Mr. and Mrs. Smithchampionship Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, This series reimagines the 2005 film from a very interesting perspective. The series begins with a mysterious agency that brings together two strangers, John and Jane, who must pretend to be a married couple for an undercover operation. As the missions become more complex and business-oriented, their relationship transforms from a professional partnership to something more intimate. Eventually, they tell each other exactly how they feel while under the influence of truth serum as things get hot and heavy. The stars of the show finally speak out about the chaos of that finale.

In the madcap final episode, John and Jane's disturbing journey culminates in their luxurious brownstone home, a symbol of the life they've built together. Surrounded by expensive objects, the couple turns on each other, unleashing their pent-up frustrations in a literal fight that destroys their home and, quite possibly, their relationship. The scene is both chaotic and intimate as the pair end up sprawled on the carpet, kissing and baring their souls to one another.

Donald Glover, who also co-created the series, spoke to Variety about the symbolism of the destruction, saying:

“It was so poetic to destroy everything because it looked so millennial. Yeah, we got the water bar, we got all these beautiful things, [but] “You can still fight it. It’s not going to make anything better. Being able to buy everything on Amazon is not going to solve your problems. So, I love that. It felt like Covid all over again where everyone had to spend that year or two inside saying, ‘I made a lot of decisions right away and now I have to sit with them. Are these the right decisions?’”
