US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he will hold three debates with Kamala Harris, although the television network has only confirmed one date.
The former president said at a news conference at Mar-a-Lago in Florida that he would debate Harris on Fox, NBC and ABC in September.
“We've spoken to the network chiefs and everything is confirmed, except for a few fairly minor details. The other party has to agree to the terms. They may or may not agree,” he said.
Of the three networks, only ABC News has confirmed that both candidates are scheduled to appear in its debate on September 10.
NBC News has been in contact with both campaigns about a range of dates, including Sept. 25, a person familiar with the matter said. Fox News did not comment.
Trump originally agreed to debate President Biden on ABC on September 10, but withdrew that commitment after Biden dropped out of the race. The Harris campaign accused Trump of being “too scared” to debate, and said Harris would show up whether he was there or not.
“Since he’s speaking, he should follow through on what he says and — as Vice President Harris said earlier this week — say it to her face-to-face on September 10th,” co-chair Cedric Richmond said on August 2. “She’ll be there waiting to see if he shows up.”
In a statement released Thursday, ABC said both candidates are now on board.
“ABC News will host the eligible presidential candidates for the debate on September 10 on ABC,” an ABC spokesperson said. “Vice President Harris and former President Trump have confirmed they will attend the ABC debate.”
When he pulled out of the ABC debate, Trump said he would debate Harris on Fox on September 4. In his remarks on Thursday, he said he would still do that date, as well as debates on NBC on September 10 and ABC on September 25.
Harris has not committed to participating in the Fox debate, and referred to it as a “safe space” for Trump in a post on X last week.
Trump also floated the possibility of a vice presidential debate on CBS. The network has reached out to both sides about potential presidential and vice presidential debates, but nothing has been confirmed, a person close to the network said.
