French Cop Show ‘Tom & Lola’ Pre-Sells to MHz, Discovery in Italy

Kino Lorber's MHz has acquired new French police drama “Tom & Lola” for the U.S. in a pre-sale deal ahead of the series' premiere at this year's Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre, which begins Monday.

The 12-episode series, which is being handled internationally by Mediawan Rights, revolves around two close friends and police colleagues who end up living and working together after their marriage breaks up, and was previously sold to Discovery in Italy.

The series was created by Camille Quas and Sarah Farkas, produced by DEMD Productions (known for the internationally successful soft crime series “In Tandem”), and directed by Jason Roffey. “Blending the procedural crime genre with compelling and engaging family elements, ‘Tom & Lola’ capitalizes on the current market demand for soft crime novels that offer a mix of humor and mystery,” according to Mediawan Rights.

Although Tom and Lola Best have been best friends since high school, they are two very different officers: she is a hot-tempered forensic police chief, while he is a calm and collected narcotics officer. The two love each other like siblings, so when Tom's wife decides she wants a divorce, Lola asks him to live with her.

Lola's easy-going lifestyle will be challenged by Tom's arrival, especially since she is already raising two children on her own. Things get even more tense when Tom applies for a transfer to Lola's department, creating a situation where the two are almost present in each other's lives.

The distinctive atmosphere of “The Odd Couple” was well-rehearsed for DEMD and will feel familiar to fans of “In Tandem,” a show for which Raffé directed 16 episodes.

Mediawan Rights added: “The strength of the show lies in the wonderful dynamic duo of two police officers and their families. It is sure to be a hit with broadcasters and streamers around the world.

The series is scheduled to be screened on Wednesday at the Rendez-Vous hall in La Havre, where it is one of the highlights of the event.
