The first trailer for Fugue, which will have its world premiere at the Edinburgh and Lima Film Festivals simultaneously, has been released. The film is directed by Mari Jimenez and Benedikt Lenard.
The city of Lima will honor Jiménez by exhibiting three of her most famous works: “Del Verbo Amar,” “Loco Lucho,” and “In the Name of Tania.”
Set deep in the Peruvian Amazon, Fugue is where the violence of the Shining Path's bloodthirsty terrorist group and homophobia collide with devastating consequences. A young shaman (Saor Sax) escorts Valentina's body back to the village for burial.
“Fuga” is a continuation of the director’s recent film “In the Name of Tania,” which was also shot in the Peruvian Amazon. “Fuga explores the stories of the gay people persecuted by the Tupac Amaru and Shining Death terrorist groups during Peru’s “Dirty War” (1970-2000). This generation, who survived persecution in silence and shame, has never been heard or acknowledged. We worked with the gay artist Saur Sachs—sometimes male, sometimes female—and it is pure shamelessness for an Amazonian community plagued by missionary morality,” they said.
In Vogue , the hybrid form is evenly divided: half real and half in the filmmakers’ imagination. Working on location with a modest budget and non-professional actors, the filmmakers created what they call “craft cinema,” working with locals and a small crew.
“It is impossible for us to imagine that a professional actor could replace any of the actors in Fugue. That was the big challenge we faced; these were people with no acting experience and living in the villages where we shot. We were there for five months. We made the film a collective responsibility; we allowed for complexity,” they said.
“Fugue” stars Saur Sachs, along with Valentina Linares Gonzalez, Miguel Gomez Grandes, Dimas Garcia Torres, and Willy Pinchi Esueza.
The director of photography is Virginie Surdège, and the editors are Marie-Hélène Douzot, Jiménez, Lenard and Octavio Iturbe.
The film is produced by Han Flipo, and co-produced by Digna Cinque, Pilar Peredo, Edgar Tenembaum and Isabel Madueno Medina.
