Giving up a character you've played for years can be an emotional experience for any actor, and it certainly hit him hard. Natalie Dormerwho played Margaery Tyrell on the HBO series game of thronesWesteros is a harsh and brutal place, but Margaery was perhaps one of the few “good” characters on the popular series, based on the novels by George R.R. Martin. The Tyrell family met their end at the hands of one of television’s most pathetic villains, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), with Margaery and her brother Loras facing a fiery death as the great Temple of Baelor was wiped out by wildfire. Dormer played Margaery for four years, making her Owns She first appeared in season two, before being killed off in season six, and her death was as shocking to Dormer as it was to the audience.
During an interview on Collider's Ladies Night, Dormer revealed her frustration over her murder in game of thronesThe actress said she felt deeply connected to the role, and would sometimes embody the emotions her character was feeling in a particular scene. During Margaery Tyrell's final scene, the character was trapped in the Temple of Baelor to try her brother, but was disheartened when she discovered that Cersei was plotting her family's downfall. Dormer explained:
“I was frustrated that she went that route, but she was also frustrated in the scene. An actor much older than me once said to me, ‘Don’t confuse the two. If you’re feeling something, always make sure it’s not just your character feeling it, it’s osmosis.’ Because if you’re playing a role, your body doesn’t know anything different, and if you’re playing a role repeatedly, as of course it is on set, sometimes that feeling can seep into you.”
Natalie Dormer would have preferred a better ending for her character.
“Good guys finish last” is definitely a sentiment that prevails in game of thrones.over the course of her life Thrones During her tenure, Margaery Tyrell faced a number of horrors, most notably her marriage to King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), who still ranks as the most despicable villain in television history. Dormer hopes Margaery will have a better ending than being another victim of Cersei in season six, as the former queen seeks to reclaim the power she lost. Dormer explained:
“So, of course, she deserved better. I wanted more for her, but she was so frustrated at that moment with the bird, with Jonathan. [Pryce]“And that’s part of it. That’s how you know you’re doing it right, because you feel like, ‘I just need someone to listen to me a little bit more.’ And in the end, she was vindicated. It’s just two sentences, but that’s all that needed to be said. She was vindicated, and I felt like I could let her go in that moment because I felt like I said, ‘She said it, man.’”
In a series filled with harrowing moments, the death of Margaery Tyrell was one of the most unexpected and stunning. As Cersei watched from the Red Keep, the entire Temple of Baelor, and all the religious fanatics within it, the Sparrows, were wiped out in seconds when Cersei’s followers set fire to the woods below the church. The fall of House Tyrell was sealed when Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) led a force to invade Hightower and kill the head of the family, Olenna Tyrell (Lady Diana Rigg).
