In July, The New York Times published an op-ed by George Clooney titled “I love Joe Biden. But we need a new candidate.In an op-ed for The New York Times, Clooney praised Biden's character and morals, and said he considered him a friend (in fact, Clooney hosted a fundraiser for Biden just weeks ago), but suggested that Biden could not win the “battle against time” and asked him to step down as the Democratic nominee.
At a press conference for Wolveswhich brings together Clooney and Oceans Clooney, who co-stars in the film with Brad Pitt, was asked how his article affected Biden's decision. While audience members could be heard applauding, Clooney redirected the attention and said Biden was the one who deserved the applause.
“The person who deserves credit is the president, who has done the most selfless act of anyone since George Washington. All the conspiracies that got us to this point, nobody will remember them, and we shouldn’t remember them. What we should remember is the act of a selfless person… You know, it’s very hard to give up power. We know that. We’ve seen it all over the world. And if someone says, ‘I think there’s a better way forward,’ all the credit goes to them, and that’s really the truth.”
The “intrigue” included several well-known names, both politicians and film industry professionals, who had previously supported Biden but urged him to drop out of the presidential race. Calls for Biden to reconsider his reelection bid grew after his disturbing performance at the CNN debate on June 27. Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential election on July 21. In a statement posted on social media, he shared:
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. Although I intend to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”

Moving away from politics, Clooney answered questions about the movie he was there to promote, wolves, Which will have a limited theatrical release before heading to Apple TV+ on September 27. The actor was asked about the film’s release strategy, which has changed from the full theatrical run originally planned. He told the audience:
“Yes, we wanted to release it, but we had some difficulties along the way, and that's normal. You know, when I did it,

“We did it for MGM and then it ended up with Amazon and we didn’t get a foreign release at all which was surprising. There are elements of that that we’re working out… It’s frustrating, of course it’s frustrating. On the other hand, a lot of people are going to go see the movie and we’re going to get a release in a few hundred theaters, but, yeah, it would have been better if it had been released more widely.”
